Orca

Saturday, August 30th, 2008

Orca = killer whale = one of the world’s most powerful predators. Six tons of awe. This may be what you’re used to…

Here’s our version…meet Orca…8 weeks old and ferocious like her name:

She still hasn’t learned to walk because Megan will never set her down. How do you explain to a 3-year old that the dog isn’t her toy to carry everywhere. It’s great having a dog again that likes all of us the same. This is really our first puppy since Sidney and Raja both came from the shelter. It is amazing how much stuff they get into and chew, and how much they nip at you…but she is a ton of fun and a HUGE hit in the family.

North Shore

Monday, August 25th, 2008

We just got back from 5 days on the North Shore. We stayed in Grand Marais at Cobblestone Cove. The condos were beautiful and had a great view…

The kids were so excited for this place because it had a kitchen. Incredible…a kitchen…as if they had never seen a kitchen before. That’s all they were talking about before we got up there. Once we got up there their new favorite part was this big, finished attic space that looked over the master bedroom. Here they are in that space pretending they are in jail.

Since we had a ‘fridge for the week, on the way up on day 1 we made several stops (all for Beth – can you believe it?!?!)…picked up some beer at Fitger’s Brewhouse, some smoked fish at Russ Kendall’s Smoke House (which I later made into fish pate…those three years at the fish market paid off!), and a few pies from Betty’s Pies. We also ate at the New Scenic Cafe (I have no idea what I ate but it was fresh and better have been good for me) and then stopped at Gooseberry Falls.

Here’s Colleen making her parents very nervous…

We’re way up top in this one…

Dinner our first night was at the world famous Sven and Ole’s where we got the Haviian Zah (other choices were the Uffda Zah, Vild Vun, etc – you get the picture). The world’s worst bartender works at this place – complete moron. If you’re ever in the area definitely order a beer…stay away from the mixed drinks…I learned a valuable lesson by watching him struggle with the people in front of me (bloody mary in a paper cup and he was very confused about what else to add to the scotch on the rocks).

The North Shore is a stream-crossing, rock-climbing, stone-skipping dream come true. You could throw as many rocks as you wanted into the water all day long and somehow the pile never dwindled. The kids never tired of taking off their shoes to practice jumping from rock to rock while crossing many a stream – it was fun to watch our monkeys in action. Christopher threw more rocks than anyone and had a blast.

Day 2 we started at the Grand Portage National Monument.

And also visited the Grand Portage State Park which is about 100′ from the Canadian border – you turn right in front of the check point. This area was deemed the “grand” portage due to a 9-mile trek necessary to avoid the highest falls in the state (120′).

For lunch we ate at Nanny-nanny-boo-boo, or something like that. Food was good – great soup and fish sandwich. The kids could have thrown rocks all day…

We spent the afternoon at Judge C.R. Magney State Park. This was one of my two favorite parks – great hiking and views. The Devil’s Kettle is located here…tons of water pouring into a hole and supposedly they don’t know where it goes (other than straight to hell apparently).

Day 3 started at the Temperance River State Park. This was another great park that allowed the kids to play in a stream and had some great views of the water. Water levels were pretty low while we were there – I think it would be amazing to see some of these sights after a good, strong rain.

The trails in all of these parks were very clearly marked and they even built stairs to get over rough parts (I sure don’t remember any man-made stairs when we climbed mountains in New Hampshire the last few summers -that would have been nice!).

After lunch at the Coho Cafe in Tofte (which unfortunately would have been better had the servers spoken english and been knowledgeable about their menu) we spent the afternoon on Artist’s Point in Grand Marais. This was another spot that the kids loved. I jogged through this whole area the morning before and knew this would be a great hit. They could explore as much as they wanted without getting in to too much trouble.

We spent Day 4 at Cascade River State Park. Easy hikes – we looped around on a few trails and threw some more rocks 🙂

We had a superb lunch at the Angry Trout Cafe. The food/drink, location, decor, service, etc was perfect. Highly recommended. The Dockside Fish Market next door supplies most (all?) of the restaurants in the area with fish – we had great service there too on our stay.

Imagine that, throwing more rocks in Grand Marais…

Megan loved walking past this modified mower-bike…it was right next to where we stayed and she stopped to talk about it every time we passed by.

I’m not sure why Beth went out of her way to get a picture of Christopher giving two thumbs up in front of this place 🙂

Grand Marais was a relaxing getaway. I’m glad we went and saw more of Minnesota. I didn’t realize how few cities (and people) exist on the North Shore. It’s basically one single-lane road up north…the whole time I kept comparing it to the coast of New Hampshire, Mass, or Maine. Land on the left, water on the right…the sights were good on the North Shore, but not even close to what you see driving up the New England coast. The food was good on the North Shore, but got to be predictable after the first few stops…nothing compares to the variety of seafood coming out of the ocean. IMHO, the cities and character of New England are second to none…anyone who enjoys the North Shore should definitely get on a plane and do their own comparison.

Day 5 – One final stop on the way home…the Great Lakes Aquarium in Duluth. Here the kids are feeding the big fishies.

Manual Labor

We are finally getting a real fire pit area in our backyard. It ain’t cheap but we have enlisted the help of a local landscaping firm. They start the week of August 25th and it should only take a few days. Then we can have some mega bonfires in our backyard…good thing I have a few contacts at the fire department. We are going to put this in an area that is currently filled with flowers. So…starting at 8:00 a.m. today I moved rocks, and dug up plants, and dug holes for new plants, and leveled another area in the garden, and built a rock wall, and dug up monster weeds, and lost 10lbs in water weight 🙂 The kids got up with me…here they are in the pajamas first thing this morning helping me get everything done!

With Beth’s degree in genetics we need to cross-pollinate this weed with carrot. No lie…the root on the biggest one that was entirely underground was taller than Megan. I’m just glad it all came up when I pulled it…no way I ever would have dug to the bottom of this one!

So…after spending 7 straight hours of digging and sweating and working hard…my fire pager goes off for a garage fire. Blah. It was almost 90 degrees here – weather that is no fun to fight a fire. I get to the station and end up being the driver (which was good because I probably didn’t have enough energy to repeatedly go into the burning house). By the time we got there the attached garage no longer existed – all we could see was a driveway and house next to the driveway…no garage. Several hours later I got back home to a much needed trip to the hot tub 🙂 We sent two fire fighters to the hospital on this one with heat related fatigue…it was a lot of work today for everyone on the scene.

While the family was in St. Louis I bought a hummingbird feeder. Amazingly (to me at least), within an hour or two of putting it up I saw a hummingbird. In several years of living here I think we have only seen two hummingbirds ever…so this was crazy. Since then we have seen a bunch of hummingbirds…here’s one in the yard today.

Phelps rocks…what a stud…lots of medals…although his life for the past 8 years has consisted of eating, swimming, sleeping, eating, swimming, sleeping…I guess we all choose our path in life. Edwards is an idiot. Did you see that weightlifting dude disolcated his elbow…ouch. Megan is afraid of monsters in her room…help! This has been a crazy week…I’ll put up some pictures from the family in St. Louis next.

Friday Night Destruction

Friday, August 15th, 2008

We went to Friday Night Destruction tonight at the Raceway Park in Shakopee.

We saw figure 8 races, flag pole races, etc. Those drivers are nuts – totally insane!!! I took Colleen and Christopher, and we met up with a friend and his two kids, Drew & Tyler.

Colleen’s favorite part was the figure 8 race, Christopher’s favorite part was the licorice 🙂

The rocketman was there – some nut job with two prosthetic legs (b/c he lost his other ones racing his first jet powered car) who rigged an insanely loud jet engine to a rocket car – that thing can put out the heat! He did some laps early on…

…and the grand finale of the evening was when they chained a car to the back of his rocket and he fried it to a crisp with his engine! Don’t let their expressions fool you – the kids secretly loved this part 🙂

I used to go to a small track in New Hampshire while in high school. I loved the races and watching the cars get smashed up. The one thing this track didn’t have was a demolition derby…those were always a ton of fun!

Megan got to hang out at home (literally) while we were at the racetrack.

Things have moved fast this week after losing Raja. Mid-week Megan was saying Raja died because she didn’t eat breakfast (she’ll be traumatized for life about skipping breakfast) and Christopher was asking questions about the cremation such as “Daddy, will her eye balls burn too?”. With amazing speed, Beth already put a deposite on another dog – I can’t believe that happened so fast. I also can’t believe my family is seriously entertaining the idea of getting a cockapoo (or spoodle, or cockerpoo, or cockerdoodle, or cockadoodle, or cockoodle), or what I have decided to call this mutt we haven’t even met yet…kaka-poo. I’m not thrilled about all of the things that come with this breed of dog…drinking only perrier bottled water, dressing my dog in a sweater at all times, getting my legs waxed, always dressing my kids alike every time we go out in public…but if it makes the kids and Beth happy then I can live with it…for fifteen yuppy-puppy years…

Raja Thompson, 1997 – August 12, 2008

Raja died today.  The past several weeks her hips and back legs really started giving out and in the last day or so she was even having trouble getting in and out of the house and couldn’t go up and down the stairs on her own.  She died while sleeping in the sun by the back door, probably dreaming of chasing rabbits.  I was home alone with her all last week while Beth and the kids were in St. Louis.  The vet had us switch medication and said we could feed her anything that she would eat until she got her appetite back.  So…I fed her scrambled eggs for breakfast, and hamburger and rice for dinner along with tomatos and beans straight from the garden.  She loved it 🙂  It was getting so bad this week that we thought we might have to make a difficult decision soon…but she made that decision for us today.  She was a good dog even though she growled constantly at me for the first 4 or 5 years that we had her.  And then she shifted her hatred towards the kids.  Babies were definitely not her thing.  She always was a one-owner dog and loved Beth, following her everywhere.  We got her from the pound when she was three and always knew her first home must have been rough on her.  We found out almost immediately that she dreadfully feared newspaper and that the word “no” would get her baring her teeth at you instantly. Beth found this out as soon as we brought her into our house for the first time straight from the animal shelter, Raja immediately went into a bedroom and started to pee – at which point Beth said “no” and got a nice snarl!).  She was psycho for water – she attacked and destroyed many sprinklers and she couldn’t stop drinking if she ever was let loose in a lake or kiddie pool.  We were at a friend’s cabin one time and they had a pontoon boat that had a green astro turf deck.  Raja kept drinking and drinking water from the lake while she swam, and then every time she got back on the pontoon boat she would pee all over the deck thinking it was grass.  We laughed and laughed at that.  I don’t think we’ll ever have a dog again that doesn’t like chasing balls and instinctively knows not to leave the yard. Despite not having a fence (invisible or otherwise), Raja only left our yard once or twice (and that was because she was looking for Beth who was at the neighbors).  We’ll miss you Raja.
