Do April flurries bring May flowers too?!?!?

April 27th, 2008

Yesterday was the FAMILY FUN RUN for Colleen’s school (1 mile around Round Lake). Well…they got the ‘family’ part right, but does this look like FUN???

Family Fun Run

Despite the cold and wind and sleety snow, it was actually a pretty day in the woods. It all went toward a good cause and got us out moving around – purpose served.

She looks so cute with her number on.

Family Fun Run

I put the good pump back in the pond Friday night, thinking that the warm weather was here to stay. So now the waterfalls and stream are running again, but I was a bit surprised to see snow covering the ground Saturday morning (can you tell how much news I watch?). Megan and I were feeding the ducks – here she is throwing some food to them (action shot).

Quack, quack (thanks for the food Megan)

The run around the lake wore the kids out which kept them still enough to take a few pictures…

Cow parts

April 23rd, 2008

Here’s Megan with her ducks (look close – there are two). She often flings open the sliding door to yell at the squirrels (“Go away! Have a nice day!”), which of course completely scares the ducks – but they obviously are getting less and less worked up by her.

And here she is relaxing…

Last night we were reading the Berenstain Bear’s “C” book and I asked Megan what body part the cows were using to balance the cake. The correct answer is “nose”, but she went with “beak”. I then asked her what the (udder) was called. She guessed “butt” which cracked me up. So we talked about milk coming out of the udder, and that this is what you make cream and butter with. So she started guessing other things that come out of the udder. “Mustard come out of udder?”, “Eggs come out of udder?”, “Beer come out of udder?”. Hee hee.

What were they thinking

April 21st, 2008

I’m not sure which of these is the craziest…

1) That a company would even make and market these two products for kids
2) That a neighbor and relative would buy these two products for Christopher
3) Or, that a neighbor would buy one of these products for Christopher knowing that he is going to their daughter’s birthday party in one week? Payback is a @?#%! 🙂

Alien Sighting

April 20th, 2008

Christopher had his birthday party today. He has been fascinated with space ever since they studied it in preschool this year. This is really the first time he has been excited to tell us about something that he has learned in school. So…he chose an alien theme for his party…and we managed to catch one…

Luckily, we had the first really nice day of the year today so the kids got to enjoy being outside in our backyard. He invited a mix of kids from preschool, star talkers, church, and the neighborhood. They got to play “astronauts and aliens” (our version of sharks and minnows) and even searched for alien eggs in our yard before they hatched. As always, Beth does a great job thinking up all these crazy games for the kids!

It’s hard to believe Beth’s parents sold the bakery with the talent that Beth and I have, huh?

No regrets

April 19th, 2008

I am addicted to the website below. It is such an emotional story – you’ve been warned. This link was sent to me via the Eden Prairie Fire Department. Matt is the son of a fire chief in a nearby district. His wife died during the delivery of their first baby…and their story is below…and gets updated very frequently…and is incredibly sad yet inspiring…

Matt, Liz, and Madeline

Life is short and should have minimal regrets. Start now and live it fully.

Grrrrr

squirrel

One of our favorite family activities is running to the sliding window to yell at the squirrel. Megan is probably the best at this as she has the loudest voice in the house by far! I read a comment somewhere about the fact that they spend 90% of their day looking for food…we don’t stand a chance, huh?

50K Hyland Park Trail Mix Run

April 19th, 2008

I ran farther today than I’ve ever run in my life.  And it was below 50F and on muddy, sloppy, slippery, goopy, hilly paths through a park.  I completed a 50K!!!  Ok…I was on a 2-guy/2-girl team and our total distance was 50K, but almost 8 miles is still the farthest I’ve run in my life 🙂  It actually went a ton better than I thought it would – for some reason I got a lot of energy with 5K to go.  Here’s my only complaint…

After the race while we were waiting for our last teammate to finish we could hear the loons calling. They are back now and even came fairly close to where I was standing near the shore of a big lake. They are cool to watch while they swim around and dive – and even cooler to listen to. It’s our state bird…I’m thankful when nature shares some sights with us.

Here’s a YouTube video in case you’ve never heard a loon:

Christopher is five!

April 16th, 2008

Today was the big day.  Christopher turned five.

Here he is with his preschool teacher who he absolutely loves! She has been so great to him this year and it has made all the difference.

Christopher got to pick the menu tonight for dinner. We had…

Appetizer – McDonalds French Fries

Main Course – Dino Nuggets

Dessert – Ice Cream Sandwiches

Yummy 🙂

Dr. Doolittle

April 15th, 2008

I felt guilty about mentioning the ducks and not mentioning all of the other animals that visited us last year.

Here are some of our favorites:

Deer

Fox (sickly little guy, huh?)

Pheasant

Nervous little Chipmonks

Frogs (how many do you see?)

frogs

Snake (which may explain why we seemed to have less fish and frogs as the season progressed last year)

snake

Robin (how many do you see?  Keep looking…)

And…

our 2nd favorite animal that we like to see come back each year in pairs…

the Cardinals

(Did you find 4 frogs?  And 11 Robin?)

The ducks are back

April 15th, 2008

One of the things I love most about our yard is visits from all of the local animals

(no, I don’t mean my neighbor Frank).

I especially like…(here comes a Tony Soprano moment)…the ducks.

They come back each spring together and they trust us and they watch Raja (who could care less) and play in the pond and waddle all over the yard, much to my amusement.  I know spring is near when the ice leaves the pond in our backyard and the ducks find the water.
