INMANHNYCMO (IN-MA-NH-NYC-MO)

Sunday, August 5th, 2012

Whew! We’re back. Three weeks on the road! Amazing trip. We started the trip by stopping for an hour or so in Rochester, IN to see Grandma T. Actually, our first stop was to pick up Giordanno’s pizza to-go outside of Chicago. We do that frequently on these trips – and then the fun part is trying to eat a slice of Chicago-style stuffed pizza while driving in Chicago traffic! Whil we were with Grandma T we went through pictures that we brought and then I tried to turn on the auto-photo frame on her desk. It wasn’t going through pictures so after pushing lots of buttons it started showing pictures. And of course it started with pictures of Katherine mixed in with our family. The pictures were great, just sometimes I’m caught off guard seeing Katherine. A month or two ago Eric posted pictures on Facebook that had come from Katherine’s phone. The pictures were great and the kids were always laughing and smiling, but then all of a sudden a picture popped up with Katherine in it – totally caught me off guard. Starting in northern Indiana there was no power to the traffic lights (I would argue that there shouldn’t be traffic lights on a HIGHWAY anyway but Indiana doesn’t quite understand that yet). As we pulled into Rochester we noticed huge trees down or uprooted and branches & leaves everywhere. Found out we just missed a huge storm. The plan was to stay the night in Fort Wayne…we got there a few hours later and our hotel there didn’t have power (so we found a hotel that did!). From Rochester all the way into Ohio as we drove through small towns there were huge trees down everywhere and no Burger King or McDonald with power (amazing we survived). I’ve always loved driving through small town Indiana while listening to John Cougar Mellencamp…seeing everyone out and working on cleaning up their small towns while JC was playing added to that ambiance.

Next stop on the way to MA was Howe Caverns. We did Mammoth Cave in KY the year before and the kids really liked it. These caves were cool too for a quick stop – neat that first you take an elevator way down into the ground. A stream follows you throughout the path and you even take a boat ride 200’ underground. In KY the year before they were very concerned about bats dying from white nose syndrome (you had to walk through this soapy mixture before/after going into the caves). At Howe Caverns they said all the bats were already dead and they weren’t taking any precautions anymore – bummer.

So…next stop was Eric’s place. We stayed there a few nights and got to play with Sara and Rose and hang out with Eric. It was a great stop and was nice to catch up on stuff. The girls are awesome and fun and full of energy and never stop and are chatty and creative and we enjoyed mini-golfing and hippo-tubbing and zip-lining (now my kids really want one!) and bouncy-castling and fort making and arting it up and playing all sorts of games and toys. At the same time it was tough being there – memories everywhere…pictures, her car in the drive, picturing her looking out the window in their kitchen, the memory box on the wall, etc – good memories but that’s the most time we’ve spent in their house and like I said – it was tough at times. But good. So glad we went there and spent time there with Eric and the girls and getting to know the area better and talk. And maybe next trip we’ll even figure out ways to capture Sara in pictures too (she runs as soon as that camera comes up – grrrrrr! 🙂 ).

And the next stop was NH. We spent a few days there with just my parent’s and then a few days later Sara and Rose joined us. We sure kept busy…ice cream and bumper boats and ice cream and Rockport, MA and ice cream and a clam bake with one of Beth’s high school friends and ice cream and blue berry picking and ice cream and moving mulch in the yard and building a wall and edging and ice cream and playing badminton and ice cream and a Revolution game and ice cream and bopping each other with the inflatable hammer and ice cream and candlepin bowling and ice cream and King Kone and ice cream and riding in the cougar and ice cream and celebrated birthdays and ice cream and pie and veggie lasagna and found the secret room and ice cream and played ping pong and ice cream and raced cars in basement and ice cream and watched tv and watched tv and watched tv and ice cream. It was a great trip – lots of fun with the kids and seeing mom & dad, and Dan & Jackie with the kids (and congratulations again!!!), and lots of time to talk and catch up on things. Very glad we came out and saw everybody and could stay a bit longer. It wasn’t always easy but we’re doing ok. Things seemed to work out great and fall into place right when we needed them too. Great weather and an amazing trip. It’s so hard to sum up all our feelings and emotions in a mini blog post (so I didn’t really try ) – love you all and always thinking of you.

After NH we headed to St. Louis with a quick detour in NYC. I hadn’t been there since before 9-11 so it had been a LONG time. I love the city – and the people and the sites and the energy and the pace. We only spent 1 night there but somehow the stars aligned and we saw everything (and more) than we had planned – everything was fantastic about the trip – Empire State Building, FAO (kids loved the candy section of the store), M&M store, Times Square, just walking around, seeing street performers doing music and also street dancing, subway singers got on our subway car, 9-11 memorial, pretzels from street vendors, Sony store (kids had a blast playing and experimenting (amazing that this was free!),great food everywhere we stopped, riding a train, the Statue of Liberty and ferry ride, and of course zooming through Beautiful Bayonne and seeing what’s left of the old army base and eating a real Italian ice. We stayed at a friend/coworker’s house the night before NYC and the night after NYC (and then got up at 5:00 a.m. and hit the road early the next morning and drove 16 hours straight to St. Louis. It was also great to see them and just hang out a bit and unwind. A whirlwind of a trip but it worked out perfectly. We are blessed to have such a strong family and support network. We are getting through all this – still have our days and will for a long time but it’s so important to have each other and keep talking and sharing.

Randomness – cross-country edition

Tuesday, May 22nd, 2012

It’s been a busy month and a half. And not much blogging to show for it. Here’s a whole mess of randomness (and not much wit or comments this time – sorry) that I’ll put out there quickly to get caught up…ready?

Here are some pics of when we were out on the East Coast. Cousins and playing board games with Grandma & Grandpa are great fun!

On our drive back home we stopped by the Great Wolf Lodge for a shortened vacation and met up with some friends who were already there.

And Easter came and went. We had a beautiful day for it. Here are some Easter pictures and Colleen wearing a furry hoodie that she got that day.

There was a double rainbow on the way home from work last week. And one of the rainbows was the brightest rainbow I’ve ever seen. So I started trying to take pictures with my iPhone (uh…yes mom, I pulled over and came to a complete stop before taking each picture). It was off to my side so check out my face reflected in the sky with the rainbows…cool, huh? Hee hee.

Christopher walking over the bridge to start on his path to being a Webelo. Next week is the egg drop – and also time for me to start planning the rocket launch again this summer.

We’ve had choir shows at school for all three kids (here’s Christopher on the mic).

Megan has gone through several phases lately…she focuses very intently for a week or so and then moves on to something else…the last 3 mini-phases have been running away, stacking stuffed animals on soccer balls for pictures (and also posing with Orca), and catching fish & water-walking-bugs from the pond.

Here she is one of the times she was all set to run away (complete with back pack full of stuffed animals plus others she could carry in her hands). I told her I wanted one last picture to remember her by…

Followed by balancing stuffed animals on soccer balls and with Orca…

We stocked the pond again with cheap feeder goldfish from the pet store. Megan has done an amazing job of catching those little fish over and over and over (and thankfully releasing them right away). So far we still have yet to have any of our kids do a dive into the pond…one of these days…

Good things come to those who wait. Sure it’s over a month later but we finally had Christopher’s birthday party. It was a pirate theme this year and of course included a sleep over. The next morning the boys had fun building boats out of whatever materials they could find in the yard. They did an awesome job…and the boat looked great…but didn’t stay upright so well in the open water…

It must be May…soccer (both girls), baseball (just Christopher although Megan is talking big about softball for her next year), and Mother’s day with banana-fudge malts & burgers at Convention Grill (super yummy!). Megan is at it again…she scored two goals last week (which means ice cream for all of us – yahoo!).

Ok…enough randomness for now…take care everbody!

Snow Edition

Monday, March 5th, 2012

It’s supposed to be 50F tomorrow but for now we still have plenty of snow on the ground. The kids have had fun finally getting to sled this year. We had some very heavy, sticky snow last week so we went out right away and made snowmen. I started a new thing with the kids where I give them 10 minutes each of focused 1-on-1 time each day if they want. Megan takes me up on this almost every day and typically has us going outside to do something like swing in the dark 🙂 It started snowing really hard a few days ago and she said her 1-on-1 activity was to go build a snowman. In the past I would have said no way because it was close to bedtime and I didn’t feel like putting on my snow stuff, but now I go do these things and end up loving them. We ended up spending 1/2 hour building snowmen (“Frosty the Brown Man” is what we called him b/c the snow kept pulling up all the leaves that had blown on our bare lawn over the winter – ugh) and a snow owl (in her hand). We had a hard time mounting the snow owl in the tree on a branch like she wanted but the 2nd snow owl did just fine in a flower pot instead.

Early the next day the snow was still super sticky so Colleen had a great idea to go to the top of our hill and start making the body of the snowman. By the time she finished that we had bare path in the sledding hill and a huge ball right in the middle of the sledding path 🙂 Guess that’s how we learn, huh?

I went on my annual ski trip to Vail last week. We didn’t commit to this trip until a few weeks ago once Vail finally started getting some snow. By the time we went the mountain was 100% open. We got probably 8″ of snow our last day there and had a blast as always. We got there in crazy windy conditions and we left in almost the same conditions plus snow. It got so windy the first and last days that I wore my goggles in the hot tub! Our first day there, we were on our 2nd run of the day and I decided to zoom off into the trees while the other two stayed on the trail. I got going a bit fast through the narrow paths in the trees and it got to where I was just zooming left and right and waiting to pop back out onto the trail. I could see the trail getting closer as I turned back and forth between the trees and thought I was just about out when all of a sudden there was no more snow or ground underneath me. I completely launched into the air, got leaning back on my skiis in the air (because I didn’t know I would jumping out), must have closed my eyes, probably screamed like a little girl, and after landing found myself laying on the ground with one ski off. Fortunately I landed in a bunch of powder but it really shook me up (in a nervous way, not a hurt way) and I skied off to catch the other two as fast as I could. We didn’t go back to see where I had fallen right away so for the next day and half the other two made fun of me and would point out 1′ drop offs and ask if that was what I went off. Hardy har har. I thought I had fallen fairly far but wasn’t sure, so finally we went back at the end of the 2nd day and saw that I did in fact shoot out of the woods and dropped probably 8′. I think that’s the biggest drop I’ve ever (unintentionally) done like that. This is also the first year that I rented a helmet – I think I made the right choice 🙂 Here’s what I shot off into the air – wheeeeeee!

Good things happen to good people

Friday, February 17th, 2012

This entire week has been amazing. Incredible how many good things can fit into one week.

Saw Grandma T. Nice that it was split over several days with multiple visits. She was doing great.

Saw Dad. Ditto.

Got to light a birthday cake with 100 candles in it (well…99 candles in it…we found one later; and we only could get about 80 of them lit before it turned into a massive fireball) and no one got hurt. I was so looking forward to doing this. It was great but next year Grandma gets “1” “0” “1” – not 101 individual candles.

Saw several roommates. It’s great to have such great friends.

Went to a Purdue basketball game. Sat in 3rd row. Got to be on tv throughout game so Beth & kids could watch me from home (can you find me in the pic below?). Good guys won.

Got some great food in Chicago (Ed Debevic’s and Giordanos pizza). Just so happened to be there on a Thursday night which is the night that Navy Pier is free – sweet. Got to jog in Chicago and watch the city wake up – I love that. We both still miss a lot about Chicago.

Thought I was doing a fire presentation to just 20 kids in Megan’s class on Wednesday but was surprised with a request to do 3 classes at once and talked to 75 kids. The kids were so cool and kept calling out “Hey firefighter Dave” for the next 30 minutes as I saw them in the lunch room and at recess. They fought over who would get to sit with me – Megan moved tables in the lunch room 3 times. Each time she would get up to switch tables we would have all the tables around us also get up and run over to our new location. Finally we got it so Megan got to sit with who she wanted 🙂 They sent me awesome Thank You cards to Senor Thompson that night. So cool.

Beth got some GREAT news this week. I’m keeping it on the DL (that’s down low mom) on the Internet. Never know who reads this stuff 🙂

We became the official 2012 who-kept-the-Christmas-lights-up-in-the-neighborhood-the-longest champions! Common – it’s only mid-February and everybody else gave up, not even a real competition this year.

Tonight we did the wish “reveal” for my Make-A-Wish child. Absolutely fantastic. His family is incredible. His smile lights up the room. They had tons of friends and family over for a huge catered party (lettuce wraps with PF Chang’s recipe, ribs, clam & scallop chowder, crab cakes, pot stickers, creme brule, molten chocolate cakes – my kind of dinner) and we opened up a big gift wrapped box and balloons popped up that were tied to Mickey Mouse’s arm. He was so excited. This organization and the connections it creates is so powerful and the wishes are magical. The entire night was filled with very uplifting conversations. Be thankful for what you have and give back.

It will be hard to top this week but you never know.

Two funny things this week.

#1. We got home from our trip and Orca had escaped from the confines of the kitchen (we had a boy up the street watching her who has watched her before). I knew the only reason she would do that is if she had to go to the bathroom. So I start searching all over the house. In the upstairs kid’s bathroom she had gone #2 but she did it on the linoleum floor. Smart doggie 🙂

#2. Christpher was telling me that I was the best daddy ever. I forget what he had done or was trying to get out of but he was being sincere about it. Our button pusher child #3 decided she needed to cause some trouble so she snottily says…”well that means that when you get older and you’re a daddy you can’t be the best daddy ever. What will you be?” I loved the logic. Too funny. They eventually decided that I could be the best grand daddy ever and that Christopher could be the best daddy at that point. I see a button – let’s push it!

Here’s a video: Granda T cake

I’m trying a new format with the pics – let me know how you like this. I think you can keep clicking a few times to get bigger pictures. But maybe you’ll have to use the Back button in your browser to get to the blog text again – seems a bit awkward but it’s faster for me so let me know what you think.

Pyramids

Boo! (right after I took this photo we had Colleen put on her Halloween costume too – tee hee hee)

Here’s the move I taught Colleen. She’s almost doing it the way I do it. With a little more practice she’ll get it to be perfect and not look so strained & uncomfortable! I think this may be the first costume that Megan actually likes a bit.

Christopher’s cub scout den got caught by the cops for causing some trouble at the mall. Here they are getting handcuffed and locked up. We let them all (including Megan) spend the night in jail to teach them a lesson!!!

I’ll let you add your own caption to this one. I did start locking the liquor cabinet after this one if that makes anyone feel better.

We got our first real snow of the season last week. Megan spent hours and hours outside in 20F weather – she is quite the trooper when she wants to be – and loving everything outside but mainly focusing on sledding, sledding, and more sledding.

Our kids are getting so smart. Megan’s latest learning from school is that she has started adding “pyramids” at the end of every sentence. Christopher’s flash of brilliance tonight was when we were working on his religious emblem award for scouts. I was trying to give him hints about who were the first people to visit Jesus. “They brought gifts and followed a star…”. Nope – no guesses. “The three…”. Nope – still no guesses. The “three wise…”. Pause, followed by this guess – “the three wise guys”? Goofball. Everybody got their report cards last week – lots of P’s, a few D’s, and I’m not sure if there were any B’s which is great for all of them. Does NH have P’s, D’s, and B’s? We made a quick trip and back to St. Louis this week – left on Tuesday and were back by Friday night. It was quick but a good time with lots of great food and seeing family. Our kids have fun playing with all of the cousins down there. We brought Orca – wow, she barely ever got a chance to rest – the kids in St. Louis love her and definitely are making up for not being allowed to have dogs of their own. Orca is always a great dog and thankfully deals very well with constantly being chased, grabbed, etc.

It’s a good day when we can get up for the early church service and do brunch afterwards. Today we tried Tilia. This place has been getting tons of rave reviews this past year and I’m glad I could finally sample it too (although I discovered that I need to go back and work my way through their outstanding tap beer selection). It was a hip place with fun food that you don’t see every day that tasted great (e.g., I had slow-poached eggs in parmesean cream with grilled bread and “three little pigs”; Beth had yogurt creme brulee; Megan had a peanut butter french toast waffle).

Tuesday of this week is the space derby for scouts and on Wednesday I make my first home visit to talk to a child about what wishes they want (for Make-A-Wish). I’m very excited to start participating in this program. I have a wish partner who is also new to this but this first time we will have an experienced wish granter going with us to mentor us. I’m really hoping this Wednesday goes well, and after this “interview” then we will focus on what wish we can deliver for this child.

I’ll close with this scanned homemade card that I think Katherine and Dan sent me just a year or two ago 😉 I found this card when I was looking through old photos that I’m trying to pull together for a calendar of my college roommates. It made my day to feel loved and handsome 🙂

Welcome home Dad!!!

Sunday, October 9th, 2011

Dad’s trip up north seemed super fast – for me anyway 🙂 Glad to hear everything is going great now – way to go! I can’t remember if I shared a quote from Steve Job’s on this blog last month. I posted a quote from his Standford commencement speech at work last month and now that speech is getting tons of hits. Click here if you haven’t listened to it before – he brings home the importance of living life in the present and not having any regrets. Speaking of which, let’s start planning that trip to Grand Marais for next August – put your arm in training now for rock skipping, get your legs ready for some great hikes, and get your belly ready for great food at New Scenic Cafe, Sven and Ole’s, Angry Trout, Crooked Spoon, Gun Flint Tavern, and the World’s Best Donuts. Hopefully we can all pull that trip off and make some great memories of relaxing days and nights up in the peaceful middle of nowhere.

I had a great (but quick) trip to Chicago and Purdue last weekend. It’s crazy to believe that I already have been there and back. It always gives me a great feeling to be in Chicago and to drive through Wisconsin and into Indiana – fantastic memories. And of course it’s great catching up with E and Wen and having some great times. Here we are walking out of Harry’s Chocolate Shop. That place hasn’t changed a bit in 20 years!

There’s some new construction that will bring roundabouts to Eden Prairie. This has been an ongoing topic in the paper and people are concerned about not knowing how to use them. So…the paper this week had an article saying there is some upcoming roundabout training that will feature golf carts that you can take for a test drive around a mock course. That’s awesome – this is affirmation that even though I’m 40 I’m not officially old yet!

There was also an article today about how fire poles are coming back (along with more two-story fire stations). We don’t have any stations in the city that could use a fire pole but that would be cool. The article also mentioned that there is no longer any tolerance for some of the hazing that used to go on such as greasing the fire pole before a rookie tried to slide down it (yikes!).

Only a few more games left for both Christopher and Megan. I thought this picture on the bench was great. This is Christopher along with one of his best friends JT.

It was going to cost $175 for the dentist to remove one of Megan’s teeth. Zowy! What a racket! I told her I’d pay her $150 if she got it out herself (yah, right). Beth got the pliers out this week and the two of them worked on that tooth for several nights. And finally…success! Here is a photo just before it came out – looks fine to me 🙂

We were greeters in church this morning at both services. Why they scheduled us the day after Purdue played Minnesota I don’t know (Purdue whooped them yesterday by almost 30 points), but I got a lot of mileage out of my tie this morning 🙂

State Fair 2011

Friday, September 9th, 2011

This is my first post from our new computer…wow, speedy. The old computer has been slowly dying…making it painful to update the blog and do anything else on it. This new one has been up for an hour or so now and it is amazing how much faster it is – wheeeeee! So here’s a quick post. The state fair has come and gone. We went twice and got our fill of cheese curds, deep fried pickles, onion rings, turkey sandwiches, milk, shakes, apple cider pops, french fries, ice cream, etc etc etc. This was my year to try new ice cream…I had honey & sunflower ice cream, honey nut fudge ice cream, chocolate port ice cream, and raspberry wine ice cream. I don’t think I’ve ever had ice cream at the state fair…but it tasted so good this year. We even got a yummy, gooey brownie and I made sure to crumble that in ice cream too. We also tried a few new activities this year…go carts and the haunted house! Although Christopher likely won’t admit it, only once did he drop completely to the ground in absolute terror as a goblin of some sort tried to grab him 🙂 Kristin, Tom and Big A came up again for the state fair which was a fun time as always. It would be awesome if next year everyone can come out and we do a trip up to Grand Marais and also hit the state fair that same week…mark your calendars now!!!

While we were walking around at the state fair this robot thing came zooming up on a scooter. It got off the scooter and started walking around the crowd and interacting with people. This thing was crazy amazing and I have no idea how it worked. It looked to be 8′ tall and based on where its crotch was, how broad its shoulders were, how long its arms were, and how you could see through some parts I don’t see how a person would have been able to (comfortably) stay in it (plus it had great balance). It would talk to people and interact, and its fingers and facial features would move around too. It took a lot of coaxing but I got Colleen to go up to it. It kept asking her if I was her daddy (she smiled back but wouldn’t respond, so he kept asking her), and after he asked her a few times he warned her not to go away with me if she didn’t know who I was. I want one of these for Christmas!

Wally sent some pictures & video of Ellicott City, Md where they live – amazing how much damage the rain is causing. Hope New Hampshire & Mass are being spared this go around. Here are some of the links Wally sent showing their water:

As of this Tuesday the kids are all back in school. They all had great first weeks of school – their new teachers all seem to be really good and they all are excited to be back.

Our weekends in September are absolutely insane. Soccer, football, dance, pictures, 5k’s, Beth working, Colleen’s birthday party, September 9-11 fire department stuff, Friday Night Destruction at the race track, scout camping trip, plus a few other things…we’re hoping we survive to October. Although the first few weekends of October aren’t much better as I travel to Purdue to see the notre dame game and then I have some wish granter training. Despite our busy schedules we’re keeping everyone on the east coast in our thoughts and prayers. Stay strong Dad!!! That’s awesome about the Cougar – sweet!!!!

Yikes

Monday, July 4th, 2011

How did a month go by since my last post??? Since then we’ve finished school, traveled to NH, finished soccer, bought a 10’x20′ pool, sent Christopher to safety camp, had some sort of stomach flu hit half of our house, celebrated the 4th, and started to figure out our summer routine.

We had an awesome trip out east. It was great to see everybody. I’m very glad that we could sneak that trip into our summer plans. I can’t believe how fast that came and went – incredible. Stay strong Dad! Whoop cancer’s butt!!!

Christopher went to safety camp last week. It’s something that the fire department started a little over 20 years ago and is for all kids going into 3rd grade in the city. They cover a TON of topics and keep the kids very busy for two days. When Christopher got home the first day I asked him what safety things he learned. He responded with…”if you’re going to pick up a power line you need to first put on a plastic glove and put a work glove over that”. Huh? What? Say that again?? I asked him to clarify and he repeated the same thing. There was a demo that a utility guy put on and that’s what stuck out in his mind. Yikes. His other safety tips were a bit safer thankfully.

There are so many pictures I’m just putting them down here in somewhat random order and finishing this post quick…hope that’s ok with everybody 🙂

Fun in the basement. Grandpa bought a new race car track that we setup and we also got the train working. Lots of fun for the kids all week!

Megan wanted to buy a lobster and crack it open while we were in NH, so of course I couldn’t refuse that. I’m used to doing 20 at a time though.

Not that I’m saying anything. I’m just saying. Whose thigh is bigger in this pic??? Tee hee

Jumpin’ Jays Fish Cafe in Portsmouth, NH. This place was great – great seafood and a nice porter from Otter Creek in Vermont. Everything was great about the meal – the city, the company, the weather, the service & atmosphere, and of course the food.

Wheeee

I think we had ice cream just about every day. Man do I still love ice cream. Slippery slope…

Saw the Nina and Pinta near Portsmouth. These were handmade replicas. After seeing how small those were and learning that the crew slept and lived on the top deck it is amazing that anyone chose to make that voyage and then survived. Not for me.

Christopher knocked Preston down so Jackie came in to teach Christopher a thing or two!

Brewery tour in Manchester, NH. There go the grandparents spoiling the kids as usual. I said no to beer for Megan but grandpa won that one.

Here’s Megan with her favorite horse – Charlie Horse (hee hee)

My favorite part of this picture is how mom is holding Sarah (too funny).

Schooner Days came as it does every year to help celebrate Beth’s birthday. Cheese curds, mini donuts, taco in a bag, bingo and rides -what else do you need in life?

Cub Scouts did a Raingutter Regatta for the first time this year. You can only blow your boat – no touchy. It was fun for the kids and was more about skillful blowing than how well your dad can make a scout project 🙂

We celebrated Father’s Day by going to Pizza Luce (good pizza and good local beer) and then walking to a get some ice cream. The ice cream place is quaint and very kid friendly as you can tell by the sign:

Chillaxin’ in the summer.

We had two families over the 4th of July. They both had kids that are our kids ages so it worked out great. The boys were in charge of ordering all fireworks and they took that job very seriously (that’s probaby only a 3rd of the fireworks in the picture). We played washers and bocce and the kids swam in the pool and had a great time.

Spring has sprung

Saturday, April 9th, 2011

Across the street our neighbor has not one, but two concrete geese on her porch – one dressed as an Easter bunny and the other dressed as a cardinal. I guess that’s a sure sign of spring. Or a sign that she belongs in a looney farm. Dressing geese up? Multiple fake geese? Can you say wacko? Stick with barbies and keep them in your house lady.

The weather was absolutely beautiful this weekend. We ate dinner by a campfire last night and today we ate lunch outside on the patio. After dinner Beth and I sipped some wine on our bench on the hill – yep, got all the lawn furniture out yesterday, did some raking, cleaned out the pond, etc. Another sure sign of spring – today I saw two big fish in the pond (they survived the winter – yah!) and we also sighted the first duck of the year landing in our pond. Love to see the animals come out this time of year.

And our last big sign of the weather getting better…we finally got Megan’s Christmas present out of the shed!!! Thankfully it worked – she loves tooling around the yard and is having a blast with it. I’m not sure that Christopher will ever figure out that the doors won’t open no matter how hard he pulls – but all the kids are lovin’ it.

The water park was great for spring break. Had a fun time as always. The kids are now doing every slide in the park. Remember a photo similar to this one three years ago (yep, this blog has survived 3 years!!!)?

Ian and Wendy couldn’t make it this year b/c our spring breaks didn’t line up so we replaced them with some friends up here 🙂

One of the highlights of the trip was that all of the kids defeated the dragon in the MagiQuest – don’t mess with us!!!

Check out Colleen’s elastic arms – how did she do that?

Our local hardware store (Menards) closed for a year so that they could completely rebuild a brand new super store. It is an amazing store now. Here’s a picture of Colleen riding up the moving walkway that will move people and their carts up to the 2nd floor. When’s the last time you saw a player piano in a hardware store?

Megan was helping me switch my gear at the fire station. Almost fits 🙂

Christopher will soon be a Wolf scout. I think he gets to walk across the bridge to earn his new rank in a few weeks. Last week the scouts learned about marbles. I learned more than I ever needed to know about marbles in my life.

573 push-ups + anniversary + lots-o-snow

Wednesday, November 17th, 2010

As I’ve done before, here is a warning that you’re about to be hit with a whole lotta randomness…here goes…

Can you believe the iu football team is so crappy that Bucky Badger had to do 573 push-ups last Saturday when they played??? 573!!! Wow.

The tooth fairy is going broke in our neighborhood. Colleen lost a tooth and Megan lost another one this week. Megan has no bottom center teeth now – she fits in with all of the hockey players up here.

We survived another Halloween. The week after Halloween a local dentist was paying $1 per pound of candy that you turned into him. Christopher gave it some serious thought but changed his mind at the last minute.

Guess which one of our cute kids made the puking pumpkin? Christopher? Nope. Megan? Nope. Colleen? Yep. It took you all three guesses, didn’t it?

They are both so sweet when they are sleeping, huh? Hard to believe either of them ever stay this still – especially not at the same time.

We got at least 8″ of wet, heavy, super-sticky snow this past Saturday. It was so heavy that we had over 30 fire calls on Saturday – morning to night it kept me very busy. Probably half a dozen calls of trees on fire (because the power lines would dip so low) and many power lines down on roads and sidewalks. I thought it would only last a day and then I’d be able to finish my fall chores…4 days later and it’s still white everywhere 🙂 I was up early that day and it was so cool watching the kids come down the stairs. They each woke up on their own, yet all had the same reaction as they turned the corner and came down the stairs. It was the same look as they have on Christmas morning – their eyes would get bigger, they would get a huge smile and yell something like “awesome” or “so cool” – they love the snow and spent several hours sledding and playing outside each day this weekend.

We also started paying the kids allowance last week. $6 for Colleen, $5 for Christopher, and $3 for Megan. They get this regardless of doing chores (although, if they don’t want to do their chores they can pay someone else to do them for them). But now they are responsible for paying for offering at church, putting a portion in savings, helping pay for their school lunch and books and birthday gifts…we’ll see how it goes. I can’t remember whether I got allowance or money for chores growing up, what age that started and stopped, and how much I got…somebody help me with my poor memory and clue me in please.

I started taking an art class at Eden Prairie’s Art Center. I had an item on my dream list related to making something artistic for the house so I looked through the catalog last Tuesday and found only one class that I could still sign up for in 2010. I signed up for it and the first of three classes was that same night. Beggars can’t be choosers – I’ve now taken two soldering classes and am becoming quite the jewelry maker 🙂 Oh yah, who’s getting excited to see what I’m making them for Christmas??? I’m glad I signed up – let’s me dabble with my creative side a bit.

While I’m on the topic…how are everybody else’s dream lists coming? Has anyone read the Dream Manager by Matthew Kelly yet? What are you waiting for – go get it and start dreaming!!!

Last Thursday for fire training they jammed us in a semi trailer loaded up with wood and other combustibles and lit it up. We got to crouch down as low as we could get and watch the flames dance over our heads for 10 minutes through the thick smoke, hoping we wouldn’t get to see a flashover first hand. It was pretty cool training – there aren’t many opportunities in a real fire to pause and watch the flames and fire behavior. The dancing flames and fire fingers are mesmorizing – way cool. Now if only we could do that without getting our gear completely saturated with smoke and soot that would be perfect.

Beth and I had a really, really great time in Chicago for our anniversary. Writing this down will be as much for me as it will be for anyone else. It was so good to get away and talk to each other and have a bit of freedom (yes, we still love you kids – don’t worry). It was an amazing feeling as we drove away from Minnesota and realized we could stop whenever and wherever we wanted for dinner and stay as long as wanted and talk about whatever we wanted. Wow – it’s been a while 🙂 Although I knew I wanted to eat at several great spots in Chicago, we only had one reservation planned in advance for the entire trip. It was at Alinea and was our big anniversary dinner. Alinea is ranked as the #1 restaurant in North America . I can’t even begin to describe our experience there – truly amazing – everything about the restaurant was incredible – taste, sights, smells, wine, presentation, atmosphere, and service – like nowhere we’ve ever been. Here are some pictures that I’m sure will make you think we wasted a ton of money…I am so glad that we went there. This was on my Dream List and made for a very special evening. Dinner lasted over 3 hours and we had 5 or 6 people waiting on us not to mention an army of people in the kitchen.

Here’s the picture I got scolded for taking (stupid flash on the iPhone) 🙂

And here are some representative pictures from their web site – this isn’t exactly what we had on our 20-course menu but it is close enough.

Oops. Although I’m sure your amateur eyes didn’t catch it – that last one didn’t come from Alinea. That’s Beth’s award-winning cake for Christopher’s cub scout cake raffle this year!!! Two years in a row. Maybe opening a bakery is in our future.

We also hit Rick Bayless’ Frontera Grill a few times. Great atmosphere and amazing Mexican food. Super yummy. Every year I get older I love and crave Mexican food more (maybe that’s my taste buds dying off and this is the only food I can taste anymore – hope not!). Or maybe it’s just the margaritas! It was so fun to be able to go out and not care when our table was ready and saddle up to the bar and just hang out and chat with the bartender. We had forgotten what that was like and really enjoyed that lifestyle again.

And of course Cafe Iberico for some great Spanish tapas and sangria. They know how to make authentic Spanish food which seems to be a rarity with all of the crappy tapas places these days.

And we hung out with all of the pretty people that Saturday night while eating some great new Asian-fusion at Sunda – sushi, sake and so much more. The Chicago nightlife is amazing – we had a special card from our concierge that I presented to the hostess lady at about 9:30 p.m. She said it was still a 2-hour wait but that the card I gave her would drop that to an hour and half. We waited and drank and stared and drooled at the pretty people (Beth gave me permission) and then ate funky food until after midnight and walked home. That’s another thing we loved – walking everywhere!!! I miss Chicago. We miss Chicago. Someday maybe we’ll move back – or at least spend more vacations there. We also saw Billy Elliot (Beth really enjoyed that) and went to see a comedy show at 2nd City. We got there early enough that we sat in the front row – which we had never done before. I won’t go into details but let’s just say I got a special dance by the hottest new female rap group – “Bitches-n-Gravy”. Beth still starts giggling picture that skit. I’ll forget where we stayed so I’m going to document it here for future trips…we stayed at the Talbott and loved it – great smaller hotel with an outstanding staff and service. They knew it was our anniversary and put us on the top floor like I asked for – made for the perfect trip.

Ok, enough about Chicago…I’m hungry now and have to go snack on something!
