Easy money

January 31st, 2010

We went to a science fair last weekend. There was a “science magic” show in the hallway as you entered the fair so we stayed there for over 1/2 hour because Christopher was loving it. When we first arrived they were setting up this contraption with two plates that they had stuck a dollar bill between. Then they sucked the air out between the plates and said if anyone in the audience could pull the plates apart they could keep the dollar. And then they made a fatal mistake…they chose Christopher from the audience. Nobody loves small denominations of money more than Christopher…he went right up there, grabbed the handles, instantly pulled them apart, picked up the dollar and left. After that his hand was the first one up any time they needed a volunteer!

And to top if all off, I was reading the paper and guess who I saw a picture of…if you look real close you can see at least parts of all of us…(shhhh – don’t tell the fire department or I have to buy pies for the station)…

It was “Dad’s night” at Megan’s preschool last week. No exaggeration…we probably heard one of the songs rehearsed 100+ times last week…sung to the tune of B-i-n-g-o…”there is a man I love a lot, and Daddy is his name-o, D-a-d-d-y”…it’s definitely great to hear, and cute, and touches your heart…the first 99 times…after that you find yourself singing this everywhere you go and making up your own verses (there is a boy who toots a lot, and Christopher is his name-o).

It was a busy scouting week too – first I gave the scouts in our pack a tour of the fire station (Christopher was trying his hardest to make a sad face but couldn’t quite pull it off in time).

And then we had the pinewood derby. It is amazing how high-tech it is…every car ended up racing down all 6 lanes and they tallied all of the results…they even gave you a sheet of paper with all of your times for each heat. The fastest cars raced down the track at 220 mph – zoom! Christopher’s car is in the right lane behind him in this picture.

Ok, time to get serious for a second, it was a sad week, a cherished member of our household departed us. Something near and dear to my heart, that I’ve had countless meals with, and lots of good memories, that has got me through good times and bad…they just don’t make ’em like they used to…my beloved sandwich maker from college finally had to get tossed out. I had a tuna melt today for the first time using my new sandwich maker…it tasted great but I felt a bit guilty…give me time.

RIP 1990 – 2010

Rancid spinning santa

January 18th, 2010

Happy MLK day. I had no work and the kids were off school today. Since I was home I let each of the kids invite a friend over today – only one ice pack total had to be applied to a forehead (and it was Megan’s) – I think that counts as a success. While the kids were all playing I decided to bake some of my favorite oatmeal chocolate chip cookies. I never bake them but it seemed easy enough. I mixed everything together – it all looked and smelled fine, and threw some cookies in the oven. They came out and smelled a little funny, so I tasted one – not so good. So, I tasted another one, not so good. I let them cool and tasted another one (well, what would you do?). They still tasted funny…so I called Christopher over (hee hee – what would you do?). He confirmed that they didn’t taste so good. I bake two more batches…of course sampling as I go…they’re not getting any better. So I call Beth at work.

Me: I baked some cookies and they taste funny. Do you usually use the butter flavored Crisco?
Beth: Yes…wait…what butter flavored Crisco?
Me: The stuff in the cupboard behind the flour and sugar.
Beth: I didn’t know we had any butter flavored Crisco.
Me: I’m looking at it right now.
Beth: I think that’s old.
Me: Uh….(looking at bottom of Crisco)…uh…April 2006…
Bing dictionary: rancid = having the strong disagreeable smell or taste of decomposing fats or oils
Me: Grrrrrrrrr

So…dumped all of that out and started over with the good Crisco (if there is such a thing as good Crisco). My mind has made my belly ache ever since and every burp reminds me of the rancid Crisco cookies I ate…yummy!

Before the cookies, I started my day by baking some bagels. I got the book “Healthy Bread in Five Minutes a Day” for Christmas. I baked some bread a few days ago and the same dough can be used for bagels. So I mixed in some raisins and cinnamon and sugar, Megan helped me shape them, we boiled them, and then baked them. Not that I’m bragging, but this bakery stuff isn’t so hard…I think some of the local bagel shops had better watch out because when Megan and I put our minds to creating some edible works of art there is no stopping us…beauty (taste?) is on the inside…

Bagels. Yes, those are bagels. Yes, they are. Really. Yes, really, bagels. Shut up.

Orca wasn’t so happy with Christmas this year and she made her feelings clear…

Orca: Yo santa, who do you think I are? What up with the lame presents you left me?
Santa: Kiss it
Orca: You best back out’ my face b’fore I bust a cap in your silly-ass face
Santa: Punk *ss cockapoo
Orca: Hope you get a bad case of the Jingle Bowels fat man. Time to throw down.

Here’s Orca going for a ride with Megan. Megan must have spun her 30 times before I put an end to the fun. Mean ol’ daddy.

And, not only has our pampered puppy taken over Megan’s chair…(this is where she sleeps all the time)…but now Christopher has started covering her with a little doggie blanket…frickin’ lap dogs….my future manly chocolate lab (named Taco) won’t be caught dead sleeping in a pink Princess chair covered in a doggie blanket 🙂

Knuckle Sandwich

January 4th, 2010

Here’s the before picture…

And here’s the after picture (after daddy popped Christopher in the mouth for not behaving!)…

All in good fun…here are my Christmas card winners by category:

* Most likely to be made into a Gap commercial…goes to Katherine, Erik, and Sarah on the beach.

* Best kung fu pose by a baby…goes to Simon Thomas Fox.

* Most people forced (yah, you heard me, forced) to wear the same clothes for the picture…this was the hardest one to judge this year. Normally this is a slam dunk for the Noonan family but this year they shockingly didn’t even compete in this category (maybe they’re saving up a huge matching surprise for the next family reunion). The Wong’s had three kids dressed alike and the Desai’s had four kids dressed alike but both unfortunately lost style points for not wearing matching pants. The surprise winner and first time nominee in this category goes to Preston and Cameron Thompson for wearing three different sets of matching outfits on their card. The bar has been set high!

* Cutest kids….goes to…heh heh heh. You’ll have to come to our house to find out. Cutest photos are in the upper left corner of our ‘fridge and let me just say you don’t want to be in the bottom right corner 🙂

We keep the photos on our ‘fridge all year and love looking at them all the time. Hope everyone is having a great start to their New Year! Congratulations on this year’s Christmas Card winners – all prizes must be collected in person…

Out with a bang

December 28th, 2009

We escaped last week’s theat of 2′ of snow (we ended up with 1′ of heavy, wet, nastiness instead) and now tomorrow it is supposed to dip below zero again. I love this type of weather – I love storms and snow and winter – bring it!

It’s been a little while again so here are a ton of pictures. I can’t even remember what was going on here…just another day in the house with Megan.

Orca’s favorite outdoor activity in the winter is stealing hats. I can’t remember if I wrote about this last year but she absolutely drives the kids insane. She chases after them at the bottom of the sledding hill and pounces on them – stealing their hats and then she’s off and won’t give them back. It drives the kids nuts!

Christopher continues to prove he’s one bad dude when it comes to kung fu. He got his yellow belt a few weeks ago and is still enjoying his classes.

This is also the time of year when we get to go to dance recitals. I can’t believe I’m saying this but it is getting more enjoyable (or at least tolerable :)) to go to these. Colleen has really gotten a lot better – taking classes twice a week makes a huge difference. This is Megan’s first year and she wasn’t so thrilled to be performing. She barely smiled at all and was even yawning through parts of her number. They are so cute out there at that age no matter what they do. I think the parents like it more when the little ones do some random things on their own to liven up the program.

Either Megan’s timing was perfect and none of the other girls were paying attention or…well…you decide.

Colleen is all the way on the left (yes, she’s the one holding up all the legs in this picture). She gets to initiate what the girls do as the wave travels down the line. I tried to get her to pick her nose or do something else really silly so all of the other girls would have to do the same thing – maybe next year…

We also got to see Megan at her preschool show. Last year we missed all this because we were in the middle of changing Megan from one school to another. Megan had fun with this one and definitely knew the songs and what to do.

And we also just had the annual fire department children’s Christmas party. It’s always a fun time for the kids. Santa rides in on a fire truck and every year we get two huge inflatable bouncy slides donated for the event. Colleen wasn’t so thrilled to be another year older – santa gave her a bottle of skin lotion this year 🙂

This was santa’s reaction while lifting Christopher onto his knee…Christopher thought that was really funny when santa was groaning 🙂

The kids have been out sledding at least once a day almost every day for the past few weeks. Colleen has stopped using her hands when she slides down the hill…and Megan has stopped using her hands and feet…I’m not sure what tricks they go to from here…

Here’s Pat Benatar, Christopher, and Colleen getting ready to sing in choir on Christmas Eve. For part of this service they brought in these 12′ high puppets that took 3 people to control. They were way cool and thankfully haven’t resulted in any nightmares for the kids.

And here’s Colleen wrapped up in her Purdue Christmas snuggie playing her DSi on Christmas morning.

And Megan later on that day playing with some new dolls. We had an awesome Christmas and know we’re blessed with our health and family and jobs and everything else, and are looking forward to a great 2010 ahead of us.

Brrrrrrr

December 6th, 2009

The cold weather finally came. This year has been awesome – November was great. But then all of a sudden it got cold late last week (in to the teens) and my pond froze overnight (the fish have been hiding for at least a month already – the next time we’ll see them will be April at the earliest). Things have been crazy insane busy. Beth’s parents came up for Thanksgiving and we had a great week. I kept busy that week getting the yard and house ready for winter – our latest landscaping changes left me with quite a few to-do’s – so it was great to have someone distract the kids for several days! And of course they got to do lots of fun things, including baking cookies with papa – they dipped the cookies in chocolate and then got to decorate them with icing – yummy!!!

Sometimes the kids get quiet for a while…and you start to wonder if they are up to something good or bad…and then decide you really don’t care as long as they stay quiet…

Christopher had his space derby race with his cub scout pack this past week. This was clearly communicated as a non-competitive event (not to be confused with the pinewood derby event in a few months which is competitive and a chance for dad’s to show off their toy building abilities). We only saw Christopher’s space derby race once and it went the furthest in his heat (but not near as far as a few of the rockets in other heats that looked like they were jet propelled). I wonder how big of a rubber band I would need to power my Mazda 3 to work…

And here Christopher is with some friends from his den…pay attention…these are our future senators, doctors, CEOs, etc…

Every year there is a turkey coloring contest in the newspaper and every year Colleen says she’s going to do it but her enthusiasm quickly fades. This year she colored the whole turkey and we sent it in…keep your fingers crossed for her (and unlucky for her she is now in the 9 – 12 year old category).

Not to be outdone, Megan colored this one (about as fast as her arm could move) that was also a contest in the paper. It keeps cracking me up because of the standard legal wording that says this is now the property of some automotive dealership and may be used for promotial purposes – ha! Yah, you are stuck with this now – it’s your property. And I’d love to see them use this one in their ads!

Awwww…some lucky kid will get a Megan doll under the tree this year…how lucky! It poops, spits, talks back, annoys its siblings, and is oh so cute 🙂

This past Friday I went to Colleen’s school to talk about fire fighting. I had never done anything like this before – but it turned out great – a lot of fun. I even got to eat lunch with the class and then play tetherball. I haven’t played tetherball probably since Horace Mann in Ohio when I was in 3rd grade – but it was always my favorite game then – and I think it still is! It was me against 10 girls and a boy or two towards the end. We had some close matches – and not that I’m bragging – but I managed to pull out 3 victories. I’ve still got the tetherball touch I guess – I’m blessed, what can I say. English isn’t allowed in their classroom so I had to do my presentation in the hallway. Colleen got to dress up with me.

Yesterday (Saturday) was insane. Orca to the groomers at 8:30 a.m.; all three kids to swimming at 9:00 a.m.; I played racquetball at 9:00 a.m.; pick up Orca; kung fu at 11:30 a.m.; Colleen danced at the gophers men’s basketball game at 2:30 a.m. (so we left at 1:15 p.m. for that and got home at 5:30 p.m.); and then it was our neighborhood’s progressive dinner and we had one of the soup and salad courses at our house (so in between all of the other activities, every chance we got we were cooking or cleaning) – and had a babysitter at our house from 1:00 p.m. to midnight! It was a fun night as always…the whole neighborhood gets into it. We even met a boilermaker couple that moved to the neighborhood last year.

The men’s basketball game was 100% different from the women’s game we went to a few weeks ago (e.g., people actually came to the men’s game). Here’s Colleen (always on the far left) – she lead’s the line in it’s various “waves”.

Jumbotron!!!

Here’s a preview of our Christmas card this year – that’s what happens when the dog is cuter than your kids 😉

Golden Goofers

November 20th, 2009

Remember that women’s basketball game I was so excited to go to??? It finally came!!! All I have to say is – “wow”. Non-stop excitement. How do you know it’s a slow game? When your kids can take as many pictures as they want with Goldy. I think he knew all the kids by name when the game was finally over.

Colleen was the star of the show once again – all eyes were on her (although it’s hard to tell looking at this crowd – did they really come to watch a women’s preseason exhibition college basketball game???).

Here the kids are making their scariest faces – whoa Christopher – dial it back.

Here’s our annual leaf picture. The kids had a blast as usual running down the hill and jumping into the leaves. We had a bunch of neighbors over one night for a bonfire while the kids ran around in the dark and played in the massive leaf pile. One of Christopher’s friends came over and asked if I had a flashlight. He found out the hard way that playing “let’s hide my black hat in the 20′ pile of leaves at 10 p.m. at night” wasn’t such a good idea.

And finally, this feels like such “dad humor”, but here’s the “big rock” I got Beth for our anniversary – yucka yucka yucka. Megan had a blast running from the front yard to the back yard following this dude. When he would pick up the rocks in his bucket she would sit on the rock and raise her arms over her head and cheer for him – and then race through the garage to the backyard to beat him back there. Nope – I’m not telling what we’re doing. You’ve got to come visit to see.

Are you ready for the excitement of the week??? Are you sitting down? Here it is. I made my second cat rescue on the fire department. I’m 2 for 2 on rescuing cats. Beat that. Last night we’re driving home from training and we hear radio traffic that a cat is in a tree. The call wasn’t paged out but since we were driving back to the station and this was practically on the way we decided to stop by. We get there and we hear that there are 5 cats in a tree in this lady’s backyard. They aren’t even her cats. At this point I think each one of us was thinking how can we sneak out of here 🙂 So…I got one cat down, and the other guys chased two of the cats way up higher in the tree near wires. Oops. All in a day’s work.

I’m back

November 6th, 2009

I can’t believe it’s been a whole month since I’ve written. Well that’s never happened before. Won’t let it happen again. That’s what an out-of-state family wedding will do to you. Speaking of which – had an awesome time – everything I said I would do in my previous email actually happened – wedding, seafood, travel, family, babies, friends – it was a great trip!!!

Hard to believe pilots playing on their laptops at 37,000 feet are making news with stuff like this going on too:

Pre-wedding excitement (control yourself Christopher!).

About as close to paradise as you can get 🙂

Megan and daddy having fun and foolin’ the world!

All the grandkids…

2nd round of kiddie cocktails at 10:00 p.m. – sociaaaaaaaaal!!!!

White Mountains – duh.

Playing in the Polar Caves. We all survived the Lemon Squeezer and the Devil’s Kitchen!

In the past two weeks we’ve gotten letters sent home from school saying kids in our kid’s classrooms have lice, strep, and H1N1. Sickos! I got to play hooky from work today because Christopher had a fever last night and not much of an appetite today – but he’s been a trooper. We got to play bakugan’s, and watch star wars, and watch dragon hunter, and work on his space derby kit for tiger scouts – he sure kept me busy in between naps! Here’s that big tiger scout:

Bad dog (taking care of my sick boy)!

Happy Halloween!

Stuff

October 7th, 2009

I start building my ark tomorrow. It’s been raining since last Thursday – enough already!

Can’t wait to get out to New Hampshire…and celebrate Dan and J’s marriage…and see everyone…and see the leaves…and eat lobster rolls…and eat fish chowder…and hold babies…and celebrate a birthday…and hang out…and everything else…see you all soon!

Sports updates: Watch out Yankees – here come the Twins! Ha ha fudge packers – go Farvvre! Boiler football team can’t get much worse, right? 6 turnovers last week and handed the game to a crappy Northworstern team – argh! Glad I’ll be out of town when they lose to the MN goophers this weekend. But I do want to see that new stadium. Just found out with Colleen’s dance this year I’ll get to see a gopher basketball game – yep, the lady gophers, and they take on Minn-Duluthaf;lkjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjjj – ooops – sorry, I fell asleep with my head on the keyboard while writing about the gopher women’s preseason basketbaljkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkkk – oops, not again.

You’ve got to read to a child this Thursday (Oct 8th). It is Pearson’s annual Read for the Record event. Click that link and then register to read. The book this year is Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar. Stop what you’re doing right now and take 30 seconds to go register – and then read to a child – do it. Now.

Maybe we’re biased but here’s a link sent via work. Crazy how much an eduation pays off. As Mr. T said so eloquently, “Don’t be a fool! Stay in school!” And then, most importantly, go get your certification and tell them that Dave Thompson sent you!

Not sure if it’s related to my blazing speed in this race, but my knee is acting as if something is torn again…anybody know any good knee doctors 😉 Mom and I will be quite the pair walking down the aisle with both of us limping!

I’m going to miss our annual fire department open house this year since I’ll be in New Hampshire for the wedding…but it wouldn’t have been the same anyway…do you call this progress? Booooo. Per our chief – “With the new child seat and booster seat requirements it seems impractical to continue our practice of doing fire truck and police car rides at the upcoming Open House.” Boooooo. The No Fun Patrol prevailed once again.

Tell your friends – sign up with Pearson – do it now and call yourself a trendsetter.

Just like the Crohn’s walk is consistently the crappiest walk out there (sorry, but it’s true – and no pun was intended there)…Liz and Juvenile Diabetes once again get the award for the best donation requesting letter. Here it is – send her money!

———————————

Hi friends,
Once again, Tom and I are writing to ask you to support the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation with a donation to Emma’s Energy, Emma’s team in the 2009 Walk to Cure Juvenile Diabetes.

To be honest, we were on the fence about doing any fundraising activity for the walk this year. Money is tight all around, and we know that many of you have your own special causes to which you donate. We also have lost some of our zest for the walk, as the newness of Emma’s diagnosis has faded. Managing Type 1 has become a regular part of our lives, “just like brushing you teeth”, as the nurses promised it would. However, we only brush our teeth twice a day. Emma checks her sugar 8-10 times per day. She needs to give herself insulin through her insulin pump any time she eats anything with carbohydrates. She needs to monitor her exercise, sleep, moods, illnesses, as all effect blood sugar readings. In addition to regular pediatrician visits, she sees her endocrinologist 4 times per year. I say she, and she does manage some of this on her own. Tom and I still monitor all of it, and check her sugar when she is sleeping, educate all her teachers and any adult who she will spend time with. We log her blood sugar numbers, are in regular contact with her medical team, and try to sympathize with her inevitable frustration of living with chronic illness. Whew. It is exhausting.

Through all this though, we are filled with gratitude for the improvements that have been made to diabetes care and management throughout the years. Her insulin pump has been a huge blessing. She has so much more flexibility in her daily schedule, and we can control her blood sugars far better than we could with shots. We are researching a continuous glucose monitor, which shows a constant readout of her blood sugars, so we can spot dangerous trends to prevent illness and stave off long-term complications. Both the pump and the CGM are the result of research done by organizations like JDRF. In fact, JDRF funding and leadership is associated with most major scientific breakthroughs in type 1 diabetes research to date. And JDRF funds a major portion of all type 1 diabetes research worldwide, more than any other charity.

So this year, our intention for this fundraising letter is gratitude. We are grateful for JDRF, all their research and advances, and the people who have funded their work. We are grateful that Emma can expect to live a long, healthy life, thanks to this work. And we are grateful for you, our family and friends, who continue to support Emma, Tom, Charlie and I in this journey.

Please donate as generously as you are able. If this is not the year for you, won’t you consider walking with us on October 18? Emma is always so encouraged by all the people who come to support her. Regardless of what you can do, we remain grateful for your support.

Sincerely,
Liz, Tom, Charlie and Emma Boucher
We are Emma’s Energy!!

Sleepover

September 27th, 2009

Well…we survived Colleen’s birthday weekend. Barely. We ended up with 7 out of 10 girls spending the night on Friday. The quote of the night came at precisely 8:24 p.m. when Beth turned to me and said “this is way crazier than I expected.” Ha!

I think that was right after Orca had been let out by one of the girls for the 2nd or 3rd time to freely roam the neighborhood.

It rained most of the evening and we had planned to do s’mores and a scavenger hunt. I still managed to light a fire with the wet wood and the girls had fun running through the muddy yard and trails, but we delayed the scavenger hunt until morning.

We tie-dyed in the garage – two days later my fingers are still not quite back to the color they should be – but the girls had a lot of fun making those – and they turned out awesome.

While we opened the presents Colleen had been prepped to thank people even if she already had what they gave her – but I guess we forgot to tell Megan the same thing. For a few presents Colleen would be saying “thank you” and then Megan would chime in, in a loud sing-songy voice “but we already have that.”

We handed out glow necklaces at some point, and as the girls were finally settling in to go to bed after their movie we heard some shrieks – one of them had ripped their necklace and it shot the glowy liquid stuff across several sleeping bags, pillows and pj’s. We soon found out the glow stuff doesn’t come out of anything that it touches no matter how hard you scrub – so thankfully it all loses its glow after a few hours.

We had the girls sleep on the main floor in the family room and we slept upstairs. At about 3:00 a.m. I heard some rustling in our bedroom, followed by a small hand brushing across the end of our bed and squeezing me toes 🙂 I asked “who’s there?” and I got back a “me”, to which I asked (to Beth’s amusement) “me who?”. One of the girls was walking in her sleep and managed to get all the way upstairs and into our bedroom – what fun!

At any rate, we survived and Colleen had a great birthday!

Here’s what’s on Colleen’s mind this year on her birthday…

My favorite food is…chocolate ice cream and pasta

When I grow up I want to be an…artist (and doesn’t care what medium she works in)

My favorite restaurant is…Subway

My favorite toy is…my friendship bracelet kit

My favorite color is…green

My favorite song or band…(doesn’t have one)

My favorite holiday is…Christmas

My favorite season is…fall (because that’s when her birthday is)

If I could do anything tomorrow I would…not have school (and she would go swimming)

My favorite subject in school is…English (because she can talk in English)

If I could travel anywhere in the world…I would go to all of the Great Wolf Lodges all over the world

Third graders at our church get a Bible – that special day for Colleen was today. Here’s our big nine year old with her new Bible!

Ribbit

September 21st, 2009

Little Miss Megan has started doing all the things the big kids do…here she is going to dance and her first day of school. She is really loving doing all this cool stuff. She got to bring home the “share bag” today from preschool and she is psyched to “stump” everyone with what toy she brings to school in the bag. I suggested she put Orca in that bag, and between her and Christopher somehow Orca-in-the-bag evolved into bringing a bag full of poop to school. Ahhh…my type of humor. Poop, poop, and more poop.

We finally launched Christopher’s model rocket this past weekend. The girls especially weren’t very excited to go do this…but after that first rocket shot in the air they changed their minds. I forgot how fast they took off – I’m hooked again. The rocket we have comes down with only a streamer (no parachute) so it is a lot easier to find but it gets dinged up fast! Especially the last time when we put a B engine in it and the streamer tore off way up high…and of course that was the only time it drifted far enough to land on pavement instead of the grass. I think Christopher will definitely be asking for more FlisKits for Christmas. Daddy will be asking for a supply of engines – I had one pack of engines from 20 – 25 years ago (man am I getting old!) – they cost $2.99 back then. Care to take a guess on what they cost now? $5.00? Higher. $6.00? Keep going. $7.00? Try $8.69 – zowy! Thankfully the launcher still works (that would have been another $60 at least).

Forgot to include this picture from the fair before – but I think it’s a keeper:

Mom (or anyone else), if you’re sitting around with some time on your hands, and are still wondering what my department (Pearson VUE) does within Pearson…well here’s a good idea of what we do based on a new program we’re rolling out soon: Pearson Test of English Academic. Maybe a bit dry but all of the software and services to support everything they’re talking about pretty much comes out of our department full of rock star developers located in Bloomington, MN.

We’ve got 10+ girls coming to our house this Friday night for a campfire, tie-dying, and a sleep over for Colleen’s birthday. Wish us luck 🙂

Ok, enough for now. Keep bending that knee waaaaaaayyyyyy back mom. 20 more reps. Atta girl!!!
