I’ll have some jello with a side of jello

July 11th, 2011

Here’s Megan Wednesday morning…

Wednesday night…

Friday…

Saturday…

And she’s still got one more tooth that’s loose up top and two more loose on the bottom…should we get her a blender for her birthday?!!?!?

DONATE – I need your money

July 11th, 2011

The Relay for Life is this weekend. The money goes towards the fight against cancer. I’ll be walking around a track all night (6 p.m. to 6 a.m.) as I’ve done the past several years.

Yikes

July 4th, 2011

How did a month go by since my last post??? Since then we’ve finished school, traveled to NH, finished soccer, bought a 10’x20′ pool, sent Christopher to safety camp, had some sort of stomach flu hit half of our house, celebrated the 4th, and started to figure out our summer routine.

We had an awesome trip out east. It was great to see everybody. I’m very glad that we could sneak that trip into our summer plans. I can’t believe how fast that came and went – incredible. Stay strong Dad! Whoop cancer’s butt!!!

Christopher went to safety camp last week. It’s something that the fire department started a little over 20 years ago and is for all kids going into 3rd grade in the city. They cover a TON of topics and keep the kids very busy for two days. When Christopher got home the first day I asked him what safety things he learned. He responded with…”if you’re going to pick up a power line you need to first put on a plastic glove and put a work glove over that”. Huh? What? Say that again?? I asked him to clarify and he repeated the same thing. There was a demo that a utility guy put on and that’s what stuck out in his mind. Yikes. His other safety tips were a bit safer thankfully.

There are so many pictures I’m just putting them down here in somewhat random order and finishing this post quick…hope that’s ok with everybody πŸ™‚

Fun in the basement. Grandpa bought a new race car track that we setup and we also got the train working. Lots of fun for the kids all week!

Megan wanted to buy a lobster and crack it open while we were in NH, so of course I couldn’t refuse that. I’m used to doing 20 at a time though.

Not that I’m saying anything. I’m just saying. Whose thigh is bigger in this pic??? Tee hee

Jumpin’ Jays Fish Cafe in Portsmouth, NH. This place was great – great seafood and a nice porter from Otter Creek in Vermont. Everything was great about the meal – the city, the company, the weather, the service & atmosphere, and of course the food.

Wheeee

I think we had ice cream just about every day. Man do I still love ice cream. Slippery slope…

Saw the Nina and Pinta near Portsmouth. These were handmade replicas. After seeing how small those were and learning that the crew slept and lived on the top deck it is amazing that anyone chose to make that voyage and then survived. Not for me.

Christopher knocked Preston down so Jackie came in to teach Christopher a thing or two!

Brewery tour in Manchester, NH. There go the grandparents spoiling the kids as usual. I said no to beer for Megan but grandpa won that one.

Here’s Megan with her favorite horse – Charlie Horse (hee hee)

My favorite part of this picture is how mom is holding Sarah (too funny).

Schooner Days came as it does every year to help celebrate Beth’s birthday. Cheese curds, mini donuts, taco in a bag, bingo and rides -what else do you need in life?

Cub Scouts did a Raingutter Regatta for the first time this year. You can only blow your boat – no touchy. It was fun for the kids and was more about skillful blowing than how well your dad can make a scout project πŸ™‚

We celebrated Father’s Day by going to Pizza Luce (good pizza and good local beer) and then walking to a get some ice cream. The ice cream place is quaint and very kid friendly as you can tell by the sign:

Chillaxin’ in the summer.

We had two families over the 4th of July. They both had kids that are our kids ages so it worked out great. The boys were in charge of ordering all fireworks and they took that job very seriously (that’s probaby only a 3rd of the fireworks in the picture). We played washers and bocce and the kids swam in the pool and had a great time.

Crash on the final turn?!?!?!?

May 30th, 2011

Are you kidding me???? Hildebrand can’t make it through one more turn to win the 500???? He cost me $3.50 and handed my mega-jackpot to Megan. Darn rookies. Megan also had the driver leading at lap 100 for another 50 cents. Colleen had the highest finishing female driver and the first car out of the race for 50 cents each…the rest of us walked away empty handed πŸ™

Happy Memorial Day. It’s thundering outside right now and supposed to be off-and-on severe storms all day. Seems like this is the weather every weekend lately. I like storms – but the rain is making everything grow like crazy and it’s hard to find time to work in the yard in between the bad weather.

Here’s Christopher playing baseball. Love the catchers gear. They use a pitching machine this year and get 10 swings if they need them. Some of these kids have already been playing for a few years and can really hit and throw. Christopher’s game is improving a lot already and he has a lot of fun out there being one of the guys on the team. We just signed up for football in the fall so this will be a 5 sport year (soccer last fall, basketball in the winter, baseball in the spring, kung fu off & on, and football next fall) – he’s still trying to find his sport. I think it will be a riot to see these little kids bouncing around off of each other in that big football gear.

The scouts had their egg drop last week. I got the fire truck to come out again this year. They load the bucket up, raise it up pretty high and then bombs away. Some of the scouts try to make something to protect their eggs – and others just like watching their eggs go splat. Christopher’s survived again this year. Afterwards we had a question and answer session with the kids. One kid was on a roll with mixed-up answers – which brought up great talking points but made it hard not to giggle. We asked the kids to tell us what they knew about fire. He said if your house is on fire you should drop to the ground and roll around πŸ™‚ We asked if the kids had a meeting place if there was a fire. He said he and his sister had a meeting place…in the living room πŸ™‚ We asked what they should do if they were inside their room, the smoke detectors were going off, and his door felt hot. He said he would run to his window and break it (we warned him that he might get in trouble if he’s breaking windows and it was just dinner being slightly burned) πŸ™‚

The same night that Christopher had his egg drop I was supposed to be coaching Megan’s soccer team. I went there for a team picture before the egg drop, gave the other coach the line up that I created, and then rushed to the egg drop. Megan has great soccer skills – she’s got a strong foot (actually, both feet) and understands where to go, but she’s been tentative in the games so I keep telling her to get in there and play hard and that I know she can score a lot of goals. I got a phone call from Beth while we were at the egg drop saying we had to meet them for ice cream because Megan scored 3 goals that night. She may not want me to go to any more of her games this year if this is how she plays when I’m not there, huh???

Here’s Megan biking off to find that pot of gold after one of our recent storms…wish her luck…

Here’s a sure sign of spring crawling across our floor…yuck.

Mom & Dad – you were asking about birthday presents. After several years, just yesterday I emptied the final crumbs into a tupperware container of my 6 lb box of “peanut brittle crunch with decorettes”…hint hint. πŸ™‚

Hey Dad – keep getting better and stay strong and positive. Kick some cancer ass!!! See you all in two weeks.

Rain rain go away

May 22nd, 2011

It was a crazy weather day today. It rained about 10 times today and it would go from sunny (well, almost sunny) to torrential downpours. There were tornados in north Minneapolis too. We were out and about until about 3:30 p.m. and finally decided that the weather looked sunny enough to go for a walk around the marsh at about 7:45 p.m. Sure enough…exactly half way around the marsh the sky turned dark grey and it poured on us. And sure enough, for the second time today we all had jackets except Christopher. It was a warm rain so the kids didn’t mind, and it brought a gigantic rainbow which was cool. Today was the art center’s open house so we were there at 2:00 p.m. and one of the crafts for the kids was making “rain makers” – funny how that worked out…they’re doing their job today!

Last weekend Beth and I had a date night and got to see The Prairie Home Companion show. It was really cool (another sign that we’re getting old). I wanted to see Garrison Keillor before he retires next year (if he actually does this time). We had a fun time and ate at Tom Pham’s Wondrous Azian Kitchen afterwards (which was also surprisingly really good considering its name). It was a mix of asian and sushi and I got to have a sake flight sampler which was yummy.

Here we are at the art center’s open house today. They had snacks, and demos, and crafts for the kids, and some awesome displays of artwork (especially the lighthouses and cardinals) by some very talented local artists πŸ˜‰

Guess I’m going in reverse chronological order today. Today was our make-up mother’s day (since Christopher was hurling on the real mother’s day). Beth loves going to Convention Grill for mother’s day so here we are at lunch dining on our real malts (chocolate with banana, and chocolate with peanut butter cups), burgers, and fries. Nothing but the best for our mommy. In the bottom center of the picture is my burger – there is so much smoked cheddar and grilled onions piled on it that you can’t even see the meat – tasty!!! All these years I’ve been a little hurt when people say that Megan gets her looks from her mommy – after seeing this picture I’m starting to agree with everybody πŸ™‚

Colleen wrapped up another season of dancing. Here she is with her teacher getting her trophy. She had an awesome year – can now do the full splits, is in the front row for most routines, is the only dancer with a move named after her, and does some fancy thing all the time that she’s really proud of where she pulls her back leg up by her ear while hanging onto her toe. Next year is the year that I get to dance with her – the dad theme this year was Michael Jackson songs – I’m a bit bummed that I didn’t get to wear sparkle socks with the dads this year πŸ™‚

Having trouble finding Colleen in this picture? Just look for the only girl doing the splits perfectly…ouch.

I can’t remember if we told you or not, but the spanish immersion school wasn’t working out so we moved the kids to a combo 1960’s & Amish school…here they are heading off to school in their new uniforms.

Mom – I’m kidding, they didn’t switch schools. It’s hard to believe that we managed to keep all three kids clean (especially Christopher in 100% white) through their school dance performances. The kids did great – lots of good dancing. Christopher’s class even got chosen to do their dance again for one of the other elementary schools that was celebrating a spanish night.

There’s been a lot of bad weather recently. Last weekend we got hail and even found one bigger than a quarter. The kids couldn’t resist running out into the yard to pick up the bigs chunks that were falling…here they are with baggies filled with hail (I’m sure they’ll still be in our freezer for the next year or so).

I have no idea what this picture is all about. The things that the kids are allowed to do in public when their mommy is supposed to be watching them. Here’s Megan’s new wide-eyed look again…

Tea Time

April 29th, 2011

Was everybody else up before 5:00 a.m. watching the wedding today? What did you think of that dress? And how well she carried herself? And “the kiss”? This is all I’ve talked about all day. Ok, maybe a bit of a stretch but we did eat Thomas’ English Muffins this morning to do our part in the celebration.

Christopher is 8. Sounds so old. We put cake and ice cream in front of all of the boys and two of them stared at their plates and said “I lost my appetite” and didn’t touch their cake – I wonder why…does this look appetizing to you? πŸ™‚

Here’s what’s on Christopher’s mind:

My favorite food is…cake & pasta

When I grow up I want to be a…scientist (not sure which kind yet)

My favorite restaurant is…McDonalds and Noodles & Co

My favorite possession is…taser rocket

My favorite color is…blue

My favorite song is…I Have a Feeling (Black-Eyed Peas)

My favorite holiday is…Christmas (I asked him why and he said as sort of a question because he wasn’t sure “because it’s Jesus’ birthday? – it might be?”, so I pressed him further if that was really the reason why and he of course then said “no, presents” – nice try buddy)

My favorite season is…spring (because that’s the season of his birthday)

My favorite thing to do is…play video games

If I could do anything tomorrow I would…go to Chuck E. Cheese

It would be a really good year this year if…I got one million dollars or 200 mighty beans for my birthday

His birthday party went really smoothly. He only had 5 or 6 friends over and we had a scavenger hunt, tie-dyed, built catapults, and had a sleep over. The catapults were a huge hit – here’s a photo of all the boys firing at me.

The morning of his birthday I ran an 8 mile race (this is the 4-person 50K team event that I do every year). The morning that I woke up there was over an inch of snow on the ground and this is the race where it is run on very hilly, dirt & mulch trails the entire way and you even run up and down a ski slope. Luckily the snow melted very fast (the second photo is the scavenger hunt on the same afternoon). I had a decent time for me – a bit slower than last year but it was very muddy and goopy this year.

It’s crazy that it’s already Easter and now almost May. The year is flying by. We had a nice Easter weekend, did the usual Easter activities…you know…decorated eggs, ate cracked eggs, hid our eggs over & over in the backyard, sang at church, got our faces painted, saw the Batmobile, and covered our back porch in big purple goopy stain-free (yah right) bubbles that the Easter Bunny thought was a good idea to give us…we kept asking ourselves all day long “What would Jesus do?” and took it from there…

Christopher walked across the scout bridge and upgraded from a Wolf to a Bear. Now we get a brand new book of seemingly endless tasks to work on. It’s all good – lots of fun stuff to do. I don’t remember ever having the option to get the Video Game beltloop when I was a kid…times have changed.

Megan was the Star of the Week at school. She really, really wanted to include the baby photo in the middle of the poster. Beth asked her if other kids had baby photos and she said no, but she really liked that picture so she left it. She came home and seemed happy that other kids laughed when they saw it. Glad she isn’t phased by some of these things that I think I would have been terrified of as a kid.

Our little baby is growing up. Still a great helper and loves to be in the middle of what’s going on, but definitely less and less of our little baby all the time. I keep threatening to put bricks on her head and not let her get any bigger…I might actually try that soon.

Very, very, very glad to hear that the kidneys are improving. That is great news – keep up the great progress and I hope you continue to keep feeling great dad. Talk to everybody soon.

Spring has sprung

April 9th, 2011

Across the street our neighbor has not one, but two concrete geese on her porch – one dressed as an Easter bunny and the other dressed as a cardinal. I guess that’s a sure sign of spring. Or a sign that she belongs in a looney farm. Dressing geese up? Multiple fake geese? Can you say wacko? Stick with barbies and keep them in your house lady.

The weather was absolutely beautiful this weekend. We ate dinner by a campfire last night and today we ate lunch outside on the patio. After dinner Beth and I sipped some wine on our bench on the hill – yep, got all the lawn furniture out yesterday, did some raking, cleaned out the pond, etc. Another sure sign of spring – today I saw two big fish in the pond (they survived the winter – yah!) and we also sighted the first duck of the year landing in our pond. Love to see the animals come out this time of year.

And our last big sign of the weather getting better…we finally got Megan’s Christmas present out of the shed!!! Thankfully it worked – she loves tooling around the yard and is having a blast with it. I’m not sure that Christopher will ever figure out that the doors won’t open no matter how hard he pulls – but all the kids are lovin’ it.

The water park was great for spring break. Had a fun time as always. The kids are now doing every slide in the park. Remember a photo similar to this one three years ago (yep, this blog has survived 3 years!!!)?

Ian and Wendy couldn’t make it this year b/c our spring breaks didn’t line up so we replaced them with some friends up here πŸ™‚

One of the highlights of the trip was that all of the kids defeated the dragon in the MagiQuest – don’t mess with us!!!

Check out Colleen’s elastic arms – how did she do that?

Our local hardware store (Menards) closed for a year so that they could completely rebuild a brand new super store. It is an amazing store now. Here’s a picture of Colleen riding up the moving walkway that will move people and their carts up to the 2nd floor. When’s the last time you saw a player piano in a hardware store?

Megan was helping me switch my gear at the fire station. Almost fits πŸ™‚

Christopher will soon be a Wolf scout. I think he gets to walk across the bridge to earn his new rank in a few weeks. Last week the scouts learned about marbles. I learned more than I ever needed to know about marbles in my life.

You’ll shoot your eye out

March 27th, 2011

Fire randomness…We had a few unique calls at the fire station today. The first one came in as a 6 or 7 year old boy who got shot in they eye with a bb gun. I thought maybe the next call would be a kid with his tongue stuck to a pole. And then later in the afternoon we had a call that there was the smell of a natural gas leak…at fire station #3 (my station!). The paramedics called it in while they were stopping by the station – turned out to be something in the sewer but it was still an odd call to respond to our own station. Every so often we get a page that there is a car on fire in the parking lot of our station. I think people drive to the station and expect someone to be there (surprise – we’re not!). It always is a bit awkward once we get there because we’re used to getting on the truck and having time to get ready while we’re on the way to the incident. When we get there and there is a car there on fire we’re not sure if we get dressed in our gear, or get on the truck, or what. We had to respond to an accident at the intersection right in front of the fire station one time. We got in our gear, got on the truck, the operator put on the lights & sirens, and then he stopped the truck at the end of the driveway to our station and we all got out – we looked like the Keystone Firefighters!!! We had a house fire a few nights ago (we kept it confined to the garage – way to go EPFD!) – here I am (those are my feet) hanging hose up to dry afterwards.

I ran a 7K race last weekend (I think that’s a bit less than 5 miles). My time was surprisingly good (for me) especially considering I was starting to come down with a cold and that I started back in the pack. Over 5,000 people ran in this event – the entire way I was running in a pack of people and felt like I was passing and passing and passing people. They sent out some cool metrics after the race – it’s cool what they can calculate based on everyone’s individual start and finish times. My metrics showed that I passed 1164 people and that I was only passed by 23 people – no wonder I felt like I was passing people the entire way – I was!

Christopher and Megan took their kung fu tests this past weekend for their next belts. Megan is now a yellow belt and Christopher is a 2nd degree green belt. I can still whoop them whenever I want – and all I have is a Sears belt. They are still both enjoying that but we’re going to take a break from it now while soccer (Megan) and baseball (Christopher) ramp up in the spring.

And yes, I’m still living the dream πŸ™‚ These aren’t so bad, right? Have any requests???

Spring break is in a few weeks. The kids are getting excited and into planning mode (meals, activities, etc). Colleen and Christopher spent a lot of time today planning his birthday party too. I’m not sure what the theme is but he put a lightning storm on his invitation, they may watch star wars, he wants to tie dye, and he was talking about building weapons as an activity. Boys!!!

Mom and Dad- you’re still in our prayers all the time. Get those kidneys jump started Dad! We are hoping for great news this week and hope you continue to feel great. I’m sure we’ll talk to you soon. Hope Linda and others were able to make it down and that you had some good times. Hello to all!

March Miscellaneous Madness

March 14th, 2011

Randomness…

Very glad that Dad is out of the hospital now – fingers are crossed and prayers will continue to be said that Wednesday’s results bring good news.

Here’s a cool video showing why Pearson is such a cool company doing lots of good in the world:

We had a family-movie-night last week and were watching Planet 51 (a cartoon movie with aliens in it). At one point Christopher loudly said “argh – tell me when its over”. I look up and it’s a scene with two aliens kissing.

It’s official. The results are in. As of tonight we were the last house on the block with our Christmas lights still on. There was one other house that had lights in a tree but they gracefully bowed out tonight. I kept asking the kids what we should do…and they all agreed we wouldn’t back down from this challenge and that we had to keep our house lit up. I unplugged our lights tonight but the partying is just beginning. Tonight we celebrate – victory is ours!!!

I find it ironic that Aunt Beth is the biggest contributor to our Purdue college fund πŸ˜‰

I printed a lot of kid photos a few months ago and we have all gone through them. Beth has told Megan how much Christopher loved her and held her when she was a baby. Now it’s funny to hear Megan randomly say “Christopher used to love me a lot when I was little”. Neither she nor he may realize it, but he still loves her a lot now but just isn’t sure how to express himself anymore πŸ™‚

Next weekend I run a 7K race. I’m still committed to participating in one timed event per month. I’m a 1/6 of the way there and have the two coldest months out of the way. Whew.

Megan’s latest love in life (after her build-a-bear and Orca) are word searches. She got a Level 1 book for Christmas (which I guess means the first letter of each word is bolded). She has started carrying that around with her and lays in bed now to do them as she falls asleep. She is getting good at holding the book up in the air while laying down and then drawing a cirlce while it’s like that – impressive. Here’s how I found her the other night…

Have you ever seen such a cute Abe Lincoln? Hee hee.

This is from January 2nd but I don’t think I posted it since this pic came from my iPhone. I took the kids to Cold Stone when it was below zero I believe. They had to prove to me that they weren’t cold by taking their ice cream outside and eating it. Goofballs.

What’s the opposite of undefeated? Don’t answer that. Here’s Christopher’s basketball team. Somehow they still managed to get a trophy despite their season record.

Here’s a portion of the Bronze Elite team holding their “High Gold” trophy. Since when did gold get divided into levels? Somebody’s got to be a loser – might as well get a taste of that early on in life. Right?

The kids put on a musical for church last week. The theme of the musical was that everybody has a dream…there’s that dream topic coming up again and again. Colleen got to help play one of the trees, Christopher got to be Joseph, and Megan rowed in a boat. Here’s Megan rowing, rowing, rowing.

Here’s our ecstatic Joseph ready to run off the stage and rip that costume off! Colleen’s in this one too, she’s holding up what’s left of her tree (someone chopped it down…but then it ended up being used to help build the manger).

I warned you…lot of randomness. I’m so jealous of Beth – tomorrow night she gets to hear the Renegade Gardener speak in her garden group. I’m hoping she gets some signed books for me. He’s a cool dude with a cool website and cool books. Yes, I know, another sign that I’m old. Oprah hasn’t returned my calls so I’m moving on.

That groundhog was wrong

February 20th, 2011

Did you check out that Purdue basketball game today? Ohio who? Not in our house. Boiler up!

Yesterday I think the forecast was something like 2″ – 12″. Today it was 12″ – 15″ and they think more is coming tonight and tomorrow but at this point I guess it doesn’t really matter. Here are a few pictures of our house, the road into our neighborhood, and me shoveling. Whew! Lots of work!!!

Ok, maybe those weren’t quite accurate (thanks Paul Douglas for letting me borrow those from your website – that’s the least you could do for being so wrong on this weekend’s forecast, huh?). Here is a photo from tonight. This morning we could see 100% of our patio…and tonight it is a different story. So here’s a question, if Beth is the one who wanted the little kick-me foo-foo dog then why am I the one shoveling the backyard?

I had to drive through the neighborhood this afternoon to pick up the kids from play dates. The road conditions were awful – I blew through several stop signs so I wouldn’t get stuck. I also feared for my life driving through my neighborhood – house after house had mean looking dudes wearing ski masks and goggles out front looking angry at the snow as they pushed their snow blowers around. Perfect day to rob a bank – you’d fit right in.

Christopher was star of the week last week in school. That just means that his parents get to stay up late making posters about how wonderful he is πŸ™‚

I used to recommend that it is a good idea to create a chalkboard wall for your kids. I’m having second thoughts about that now. Grrrrrrrrr.

Has anyone read The Dream Manager yet? Created your dream lists? Or bucket lists? One of my dreams was to take some art lessons. I took a soldering class in the fall and made the ugliest jewelry you’ve ever seen in your life. Absolutely awful. Not my calling. So now I’m taking some water color classes – they fit with my open Wednesday nights and it is a TON better than that last class. Here are two of my paintings after a few lessons…the lighthouse painting isn’t done. I think I paint a few nudes next. Guess what everybody’s getting for Christmas this year?

I’d write more but it’s time to go shovel (again).
