Randomness

June 16th, 2008

My company had an outing to the St. Paul Saints last Sunday. This was two days after Christopher’s surgery so I got to carry him for miles and miles and up and down stairs all through the stadium. Wheeee!

Apparently the Saints won – we left in the 5th, which was longer than most other families with small children. The Saints do something between every inning too…contests, singing, promotions, giant eyballs racing, playing horseshoes with hunks of meat, dumping a mystery container over somebody’s head (someone a few rows up got sour yogurt dumped on them)…but still the kids were “soooooo bored”. Beth’s parents came up and got to go to the game too. And the kids got free carboard masks at the game (Colleen’s headless picture creeps me out)…

Remember a month ago when I wondered what was going on in front of my house? I still have no idea, but the toys they are bringing in keep getting bigger and badder. I’ve always wanted to live on a windy dirt road, but this isn’t actually what I pictured.

You can always hope that if the kids see what goes into a meal and have so much fun making it that they will eat it. Nope.

The yard is starting to brighten up. We’ve had a ton of rain so everything is shooting up now.

And we had a great Father’s Day. Breakfast in bed, went for a bike ride, fired up the grill, watched Tiger tie things up, made a camp fire, ate s’mores, played outside with the kids, almost watched the Celtics put it away…lazy and perfect. Here the kids are with marshmallow everywhere (I don’t know how Colleen and Megan got so much in their hair). And, no, I don’t have any favorites, it just so happens that one of the kids decided to cooperate (Colleen is getting smarter about asking “is this going on your web page?”).

Fresh eggs

June 7th, 2008

We had a busy day today. I’m glad Beth’s parents were able to make it up to help with Christopher’s surgery. Momma duck took a short break today from sitting on the eggs to swim in the pond and get a drink. She let me take some pictures of her family-to-be.

I also saw a Boba Fett likeness on our water tower today. Not sure what he was going up there, but he seemed friendly and didn’t try to shoot me. Maybe Han Solo is in Carbonite in our water tower – seems like as good a spot as any.

Boba

Our backyard used to be covered in the spring with Dame’s Rocket. I since learned that they are a noxious weed so we’ve been pulling them over the years from our backyard. I don’t feel so bad because on the other side of our hill there are still a few (yes, this is still our yard). This is what cars get to see as they drive by.

We also ran our first ever garage sale today. The plan was to get rid of our baby stuff. We learned a few things…#1 – garage sales suck. We brought our stuff to our neighbor’s yard and hung out with them all morning. This was a neighborhood-wide garage sale so we should have had a big crowd. It was overcast but I’m not sure what else kept people away this year. We made $13.80 for the day – woohoo! We’re donating everything next week. Next time we skip the garage sale and just donate everything. Here’s Beth in her power sales mode.

Jello Art

June 6th, 2008

Christopher had his hernia surgery Friday. Everything turned out great – and he is recovering like a champ! His surgery wasn’t until 1:00 p.m. and he wasn’t allowed to eat solids 12 hours prior to that. I don’t think Christopher has gone more than 3 hours without snacking in his life – this was going to be a true challenge for him and us πŸ™‚ They said we could feed him jello beforehand…and Beth went crazy with it. Here is her rainbow creation.

Jello

Although I haven’t received a ton of requests for my picture on the web site, I know you’re all wishing you could see more of me. Here is my reflection in the Jello mold (taken by myself) which I have entitled “Nude jello reflection #2”.

Jello

Christopher happened to have his surgery on Beth’s birthday – here they all are a few hours after we got home from the hospital. It is amazing how fast he was feeling great considering he has two incisions and one is an inch long.

How do you like our stream and Iris in this picture?

Duck

Hopefully that is all Raja sees too when she looks over this area. Look closer. I caught Mrs. Duck today doing exactly what I told her not to do…sitting on eggs. I’m excited to see little duckings (in less than 28 days) but I’m not so sure that she picked the best spot. She is well hidden, but does she intend to have a dozen little duckies following her around in our pond. Yikes!

On the bright side, I get to continue to say “MR Ducks” – do you remember this one from when you were a kid?

Megan helped me fill the hot tub this weekend. It started leaking over the winter so I drained it (and got to fill every single jet with antifreeze on a zero-degree day several months ago) – what fun! I love these pajamas she’s wearing, and what a devilish grin she has, huh?

Schooner Days came and went this weekend. This is the fair at Round Lake that comes every year for Beth’s birthday. Actually, Beth and I found out we’ve been saying it wrong all these years. Good thing we have the kids to correct us – it is actually “scooter” days. Silly us. Here they are absolutely petrified of this high-speed helicopter ride!!!

This is Colleen’s last week of school. 1.5 days left. Monday they went to the zoo. Beth felt bad for the other two kids so she took them to the zoo on the same day (I’m not sure if they saw Colleen while they were there or not). Here they are with some big rat thing that likes to dig holes.

The other thing I did last Sunday was go to the memorial service for the fire fighter’s wife that died. I’ve never been to anything like this service. If anyone says even a tenth of the nice things about me that they said about her then I’ve lived a good life. There must have been over 400 people there and they had great music and wonderful speakers that said amazing things about Karen. It was inspiring. We should all live life to its fullest. No time to waste – get going!

Poop Ahoy

June 1st, 2008

Christopher was my big helper all day yesterday.Β  One of our tasks was to pick up doggie doo doo and he got this great idea to yell “Poop ahoy!” every time he found some poop for me to pick up.Β  He must have yelled that 50 times – and it never lost its charm.Β  I’m going to start using that when I’m in public restrooms from now πŸ™‚

Colleen had her school play last week.Β  She did two dances and also had a speaking part (in English) to announce the next dance.Β  For one of the dances her class all made their ownΒ not-so-cute masks in art class to wear.

We are also getting ready for our first ever garage sale. The kids have sworn to buy back most of their stuff at the garage sale, so I can already tell this is going to be a fun day coming up. Here’s Megan stuck in her exercauser and loving it! I was inspired by one of my co-workers who took Thursday and Friday off to run a garage sale at her house – she told me Friday she made a grand total of $6 dollars the day before – whoohoo!

Christopher has surgery scheduled for this coming Friday (Beth’s birthday). He has an inguinal hernia. This is the same thing that Beth was born with, and that Megan already had surgery for. They are going to fix a slight undescended issue that he was born with while they are in there, something we previously had decided was way too minor for surgery. Did I cross any lines and give too much detail? Or should I post some pictures too?

Poop ahoy!!!

Memorial Day

May 28th, 2008

We visited Fort Snelling on Memorial Day. I had only been there once before, probably about 10 years ago. We did a volunteer day there with KPMG and afterwards listened to Kirby Puckett give us a motivational speech. I remember at the time that I had never even heard of him and didn’t know who he was. This was a bit before his groping incident with the floozy in Eden Prairie.

This time, they were dressed in character, and fired a cannon and their riffles. The cannon was incredibly loud – and the blast blew your hair back.

Fort

We noticed that their flag is a little dated. Someone ought to fix that.

I know it is a bit early, but for my birthday this year all I want is sleep. Megan is the only one sleeping through the night now, go figure. Christopher’s entire head is filled with snot so he has sounded like a pug the past week – gasping as he eats, and gasping as he sleeps. Hopefully this is a cold and not allerergies – I don’t think I can put up with it all summer!

Christopher spent a while yesterday completing coloring my Heron with chalk. He was pretty proud of that.

Heron

For his punishment I made him cut the grass (check out the scabs on his arm – those have been there for over a month. The boy has switched from picking his nose to picking his scabs!!!).

Grass

Colleen is loving gymnastics this year. I picked her up last night and they let me go out to the mats and see all of the new skills that she has learned. They said she can go to level II now (if we let her take a class over the summer, otherwise she stays at level I in the fall – what a scam πŸ™‚ ). Here she is showing off her bridge.

The Celtics just managed to pull off a win – go KG! They need to win one more now against Detroilet.

Last week was the final preschool class for Christopher and the final 2-year-old class for Megan. Friday morning they each had a post-class gathering with their classmates. Here is Christopher’s class at the playground. Check out the ratio of boys to girls – lucky guys! Megan is in there too, and for the only time in her life is the only one looking at the camera!!

Later that night we went out for ice cream. This was our first visit of the year to Adele’s for frozen custard. This has always been my favorite ice cream place – good treats, great atmosphere, nice relaxing drive to get there. They are in Excelsior which is right on Lake Minnetonka. It is hip and fun and where all the beautiful people gather all summer to play with their expensive toys on the lake.

Why blog?

May 25th, 2008

According to Wikipedia, “A blog (an abridgment of the term web log) is a website, usually maintained by an individual, with regular entries of commentary, descriptions of events, or other material such as graphics or video.”

Further, it lists types of blogs, such as Personal blogs. “The personal blog, an on-going diary or commentary by an individual, is the traditional, most common blog. Personal bloggers usually take pride in their blog posts, even if their blog is never read by anyone but them. Blogs often become more than a way to just communicate; they become a way to reflect on life or works of art. Blogging can have a sentimental quality. Few personal blogs rise to fame and the mainstream, but some personal blogs quickly garner an extensive following.”

And they list some benefits, the one I most relate to now is this one. Therapeutic benefits: “Scientists have long known the therapeutic benefits of writing about personal experiences. Blogs provide another convenient avenue for writing about personal experiences. Research shows that it improves memory and sleep, boosts immune cell activity and reduces viral load in AIDS patients, and even speeds healing after surgery.”

This has been a great tool to help me post and write and journal more about the kids – and ducks πŸ™‚ It has benefited me more than I thought it would – I didn’t anticipate that. I guess it is therapeutic. It has also started some multi-way dialog with family – that is a great benefit and keeps it fun.

Time to pause for a minute. I started posting on this site a few months ago as a way to share more about what’s going on with my family. I just started posting pictures and writing without much clear direction. My main objective has been to post pictures as frequently and timely as I can, without putting a lot of effort into being witty or deep. I struggle with that a bit as I’ve seen many great blogs that are witty, deep, and have better pictures πŸ™‚ Let me know what you want to see and read about here. Can I every so often write about something on my mind that isn’t related to my kids? Would you rather I keep putting that in a separate hand-written journal that I keep? I don’t put my deepest, darkest thoughts in that either for fear of who’s going to find it after I’m gone, but it’s more gunk than you’ll ever find here.

For instance, this week I’ve been thinking a lot about the family of a firefighter whose wife finally passed away after a recurring battle with cancer. I saw him and his son several weeks ago and as we were talking he made the comment “you never think you’ll be here”. I agree – this is way too young for them to be going through losing a wife and mother. It is so easy to say “don’t take life for granted” and “enjoy every moment”, but then you get wrapped up in the frustrations of life…these little wake up calls last temporarily but eventually dissipate and you unfortunately get back into your old routine and forget to honor and cherish the ones you love all the time. Another coworker was diagnosed with breast cancer within the past few weeks – again, way, way too young. As Gio put it, “we’ll have lots of inspiration guiding our steps” in the Relay for Life this year. It is a very powerful event that I’ve done for several years now. I won’t pressure anyone to donate to any of the events that I do, but if you get the urge – we are the Eden Praire Police and Fire team (I haven’t registered yet so wait a few weeks). Another co-worker has a son who beat cancer – his team every year is Chris’ Cancer Crushers. He is still in high school so they always have a huge crowd that brings a lot of energy with it. Last year an insane member of their team carried a 45 lb wait around the track with him over his head for lap after lap after lap. I don’t know what it represented but his stamina and energy for this event was amazing!

Another, for instance of something I could blog about. Last week I started listening to The Secret on CD as I drove to work. It’s hard for me to talk about The Secret without violating the premise of the secret. The Secret is the Law of Attraction – you get what you think about (which is especially important if your thoughts are mostly negative). Basically, for example, if you want to get more money you need to start thinking positively about money. Every thought must be positive. If you see a new car (that you previously thought you couldn’t afford, and regardless of what is actually in your bank account), you tell yourself “I can afford that car; I can buy that car”, you do the same about everything you see that week “I can afford that whatever”. You similarly think positive thoughts about everything in your life. You turn negative statements into positive statements (instead of “I hate McCain”, you say “I love Obama“). So…was I skeptical before…sure (to put it mildly). Am I skeptical now…I can’t say anymore (as I said, for fear of violating The Secret). I’ve been forcing myself to have positive thoughts about money all week…and then last night I get an email from my dad saying he’s sending a check as a result of an inheritance from my Great Uncle. Truly amazing! The ironic part is that we just met with our financial advisor Wednesday morning and we decided then that I needed to sell some stock in order to take advantage of something else (trust me, the details will bore you) – the check that my dad is sending is the exact amount of the stock that I needed to sell – that’s crazy. I’m still going to sell that stock so I can do something more fun with this new found money – but I’m telling you to start thinking positive thoughts all the time. You are what you believe.

Ok, now this is way too long, but I do want to hear your thoughts on whether me putting in stuff like this will drive you away from this site. Let me know.

RNC = Rafter?

May 21st, 2008

We made our first trip to the arboretum this past Monday night. Every year they have a theme (e.g., tree houses, bugs) and this year it looks to be “trees”. They were just starting to get their displays setup throughout the area. We walked a while and then drove on the 3-mile loop to get to the large maze. The kids love the maze – or at least they think they do until they get lost somewhere in the middle. Last year Beth and I went to the lookout tower at the end and tried to watch the kids wander through the maze. At one point they were both crying and lost – it turns out that Colleen thought she had two bees in her hair and was scared to move anywhere. So she just stood there and cried with Christopher not sure what to do. It’s shocking they wanted to come back… On the way to the maze we saw at least 7 wild turkeys all grouped together (warning, Cliff Clavin moment: I now know this is called a “rafter” of turkeys – you’re welcome, that will save you on jeopardy some day). They always look so huge in the wild. It was hard to get the kids to stay still long enough to take a picture – but I managed a few.

I know, I’m old and turning into a bird nerd. Check out the Cedar Waxings in our stream – the tips of their wings and tail look like they’ve been dipped in brightly colored wax. I count at least 8…

And the best part of spring…our first strawberry-rhubarb pie of the season made with rhubarb from our yard. It was a huge self-realization a few years back when I realized I am a pie person and definitely not a cake person. All my life I’ve been eating cake at birthday parties, weddings, etc and never really enjoyed it. Cake won’t make me happy, it never does, so don’t even offer it to me, ever, eat it yourself. Pie on the other hand…yummy…any kind will do…

Megan graduated at the top of her class. This is right before she gave her commencement speech.

It was a beautiful day today – with some strong winds as you’ll see in a few pictures. We lived, breathed, and played soccer all day today – Colleen’s pictures at 11:30, Christopher’s pictures at 2:30, Colleen’s game at 3:00, and Christopher’s game at 5:00. Colleen had an awesome day. Her team won 3 – 1 and she scored the final two goals (yeah – ice cream for the Thompson family!). This year there are 7 players on the field for each team including the addition of a goalie. Here is Colleen coming off of the field right after she scored her second goal and about to give Beth high five.

Here’s Christopher warming up before the game πŸ™‚

And of course we can’t leave Megan out. Yes, it was just a bit windy at times.

Hey dad, if you thought my train video was weird then you probably shouldn’t read this next part I found on the Internet (I was researching the apparent violent biting behavior of our ducks πŸ™‚ )

“When a sufficient amount of head bobbing has taken place, and the female is ready, she will stretch out her neck and allow the drake to mount. To keep his balance, the drake bites the back of the hen’s neck.”

You can all stop worrying about momma mallard – she likes it rough πŸ˜‰
